In an interview with Automotive News (Subscription Required), Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski said Hyundai and Genesis are working on a number of plug-in hybrid vehicles as an interim step before moving to hydrogen.
"Some of those [plug-in hybrids] will take the form of the Genesis side of our business. We believe alternative-propulsion engines are going to be really important -- even more important in the luxury market than they are in the mainstream market," said Zuchowski.
"You get a lot of the benefits of electric vehicles but with a safety net. We think that's a wonderful midterm strategy."
Zuchowski declined to say which Genesis models would offer a plug-in hybrid option.
That isn't going to stop you from taking some possible guesses?
Nope. We know Genesis will have a couple of SUVs, a compact sedan, and coupe, alongside the G80 midsize and G90 flagship by 2020. Considering what BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche currently offer in terms of plug-in hybrids, they tend to be SUVs and flagship sedans. We wouldn't be surprised if there are a G90 and am SUV offering a plug-in hybrid powertrain option.
