Autocar reports that Hyundai is working on a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that will be its own vehicle. Currently, Hyundai uses the last-generation Tucson as the base for its fuel cell vehicle.
“Developing a bespoke car offers clear advantages. For instance, the larger the radiators on a fuel cell car the better, and you can see on the Mirai that they have developed a cooling solution that helps with that scenario,” explained Sae-Hoon Kim, Hyundai-Kia’s head of hydrogen fuel cell research.
Kim says a realistic target for a next-generation hydrogen vehicle is a range of 500 Miles and a top speed of 110 MPH. The current Tucson fuel cell has a range of 375 Miles and a top speed of 100 MPH.
Kim explained that Hyundai hasn't made a decision as to why type of vehicle the next fuel cell will be. Speculation has Hyundai sticking with a crossover/SUV bodystyle as sales of SUVs continue to boom around the world. As to when the vehicle will launch, Kim said it would be in 2020.
