Autocar reports that Mercedes-Benz will be launching a new generation of small-displacement gas engines for their new compact vehicles. Launching with the all-new A-Class next year, the engines will range in size from 1.2 to 1.4L. This is part of an effort being put forth by the company to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy for their small cars. The new engines will join a heavily revised M274 engine that will come in 1.6 and 2.0L.
The new small-displacement engines, codenamed M282, was developed jointly with their alliance partner, Nissan-Renault. These new engines were designed for transverse applications, meaning they will likely not appear in larger Mercedes models.
One item that is unclear is whether or not the U.S. will see any of these new downsized engines.
