But there is fresh competition in the form of the updated Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi L200 trucks. Plus, Mercedes-Benz is hard at work on their truck that is expected sometime late next year. Volkswagen knew it was time to update the Amarok.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles - the folks behind the Amarok - have released some digital sketches showing off an updated Amarok. The front end gets a new front end that is more striking with a new grille and headlights. The front also gets a more prominent skid plate. The only change around back looks to be a new bumper. The interior looks to follow other Volkswagen models with a similar center stack design and a revised instrument cluster.
Volkswagen isn't saying if there will be any changes under the hood. But Autocar says there is a possibility of a variant of the EA228 2.0L four-cylinder diesel going into the truck. The current model uses a twin-turbo 2.0L four-cylinder diesel that can produce either 124 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, or 161 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque.
Volkswagen says the updated Amarok will go on sale towards the end of the year. Like the current model, we don't expect the updated Amarok to come to the U.S. anytime soon.
