GM is Making Huge Push for Vehicle-to-Home Charging on New EVs like the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ

Ford has received a great deal of attention for the Ford Lightning’s ability to power homes during power outages. GM has already promised to provide the vehicle-to-home charging ability on the 2024 Silverado EV, 2024 GMC Sierra Edition 1, and the all-new 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ. Now, the automaker is planning to make bidirectional charging available on new Ultium-based EVs by 2026.

Vehicle-to-Home Charging Added Benefits

General Motors sees energy management as a huge business going forward. That is why it formed a separate division called GM Energy to manage the increased need for charging solutions. GM Energy already offers the installation of home charging equipment. In the future, GM Energy will help drivers install Vehicle-to-Home charging equipment. Drivers can choose to be able to transfer energy from their vehicles to a properly equipped home if they want. The technology allows consumers to store and transfer energy to help offset electricity needs during peak demand days and mitigate the impact of power outages, making the transition to an all-electric future even more compelling.

Customers will be able to use V2H technology on compatible GM EVs through GM Energy’s available Ultium Home offerings.  The GM Energy Cloud is a software platform which will allow users to manage the transfer of energy between vehicles, storage and their homes.

GM Intends to Equip Wide Range of EVs with V2H Technology

While the Vehicle-to-Home charging ability has been promised on some of the more expensive EVs, GM also plans to offer the service on the more affordable future EVs as well. So far, GM is planning to offer the V2H ability on the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST, followed by the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ and the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ.

Interestingly, GM does not mention the Chevrolet Bolt. Chevrolet recently announced that the popular small EV will be switched over to the Ultium platform and reintroduced. It had been discontinued after issues with its older battery system.  GM also doesn’t mention the GMC HUMMER pickup and HUMMER EV. They were the first vehicles on the Ultium platform but are considered niche vehicles not mass production vehicles.
