Toyota is in the middle of a massive initiative. We are fortunate as fans and potential consumers, as Toyota is producing plenty of refreshed models, along with new trim levels with improved styling and features. There will be more hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, like the Sienna and the returning Venza, than you can believe within the next 5 years.
Oh, and there will be vehicle redesigns. Like the 4Runner, which will probably come out for 2022 model year. Yes, and the 2021 Tundra. No wait, it looks like there will be a delay for Toyota’s extremely popular full-size truck.
Why redesign Toyota Tundra anyway?
Toyota Tundra does exactly what it needs to do, for most people at least. It has built an incredible pedigree of toughness, reliability and dependability. You will also find it has terrific resale value, based on kbb.com findings, when the time comes to either trade it in or sell it. But it has been many years since it was completely redesigned.
Current 2020 Tundra models all feature a 5.7-liter V8 engine that is efficient and trustworthy, producing 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. torque. It is matched with an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission with intelligence. Toyota Tundra is available in both CrewMax and Double Cab configurations.
I have been hearing speculation about what this new 2022 Tundra will look like and how it will perform. We know there will be a new powertrain with multiple potential engines. There may be a new V8, or quite possibly a Twin Turbo V6. We can definitely expect at least some trim levels will feature a hybrid power plant. I would not be surprised to see a new CrewMax cab size with a longer bed than the standard 5.5’ bed it currently has. So many rumors. Not much confirmed. This is both exciting and frustrating at the same time.
The prevalent rumor for the last year was we were looking at the 2021 model year for the new Tundra. However, word within Toyota circles is that we can expect the 2022 Tundra as the new moving target date.
I looked at feedback from fans of the Toyota Tundra, and there are really two completely different schools. Some people were disappointed with the delay, while others understood and were holding patiently. I found this polar opposite situation fascinating.
We want a redesigned 2021 Tundra now
There are many who are losing patience while waiting for the new 2021 Tundra – or the new 2022 Tundra.
Jim had this to say. “I've been waiting to see what the new Tundra has before I buy my next truck. Not going to wait another 2 years.”
“At this point who cares. They've had the same truck for 13 years. I think all the excitement is already gone.” Said Mysterious Stranger.
Alfredo is ready to see this new Tundra already. “Toyota better WOW everyone with the 2022 Tundra, making me wait to trade my current Tundra.”
“By that time, Ford and GM are gonna be working on their next flying truck.” Commented Oscar.
Steve wondered, “I really hope this is not the case for the Tundra, that would put a real wrench in my plans. Hopefully this is just purposeful misinformation.”
We can wait for new 2022 Tundra
And, of course, there are those who are patiently awaiting the launch of our newest Toyota Tundra. They want to see Toyota hit this one out of the park.
Shutupish added this comment. “I mean the current Tundra still looks good. I don’t mind the wait.”
“I will be getting rid of my Ram if Tundra does some major updates and keeps it reliable. Tired of having my Ram in for constant warranty and recall work. Don't believe everything you hear about how great the Ram is.” Commented Sunset Originals.
“CrewMax with Longer bed!? That is what I have been waiting for, now I have more reason to wait for it lol!” Smirked Bryan.
Eddie is like the Yoda of trucks. “Hey, at least you'll know the Tundra that they put out will be reliable as heck with all the time they've had to work and test it.”

Angel has a good idea what Toyota quality is all about. “This is nothing new, if you know anything about Toyota it’s that they love to get it right rather than rush a product. I rather wait, hopefully they bring back the single cab.”
“On that Tundra: Love the 4 door CrewMax w/ a 6ft+ bed. Hope they keep a V8 to go with that combo.” Said The Anti-Nowhere Lane.
Jose dropped this in. “Well I say it's a good idea to keep testing the vehicle because look it's hard to keep releasing new vehicles every year, but it's harder to keep the vehicle reliable. So, I say test the vehicle as long as possible to make sure its reliable.”
Time for your thoughts on 2022 Toyota Tundra

Toyota always takes the conservative, reliable route. I have been frustrated they haven’t brought out a diesel. Talk about a reliable fuel efficient workhorse. Once again they’re likely to disappoint me. I’m a diesel guy so guess i’ll Have to pass Toyota by again.

That will NEVER happen. Toyota has said time and time again that they do not have any plans, not even talks about bringing a diesel to NA because of all the money needed to put into them to make regulations, for a money counting accounting company like Toyota it is not worth it, Toyota doesn't settle for small margins. Not to mention Toyota is THE largest and most advanced, in hybrid tech, you'll definitely see a hybrid Tundra and not a diesel, even the F-150 is getting a hybrid. They even said they won't produce full EVs because they believe in hydrogen tech, and most of Europe and Asia is banning diesel/combustion sales in 5 years, what makes you think they'll invest in dead diesel? About 3% of F-150, 2.3% of Ram 1500, 1.7% of Silverados 1500 sold are diesels, and the Tundra only has 4% of market share in half tons, so... even less reason to bring in a diesel. I would love me a diesel Toyota pick up, but it ain't gonna happen.

I have been told by a saleperson at my dealer that "The Diesel is off of the table because of the Volkswagen emission experience. Toyota does not want the liability."
I have not found this statement to be wrong. He said a small V6 likely. Turbo charged.

My 2012 Tundra was the most unreliable vehicle I ever owned. And no, the 5.7 is not efficient. At all. Ever. The next gen also would need to have a crew cab 6.5 foot bed option for my to even consider it.

I own a 2019 1794 Tundra,,The truck is awesome but now that I own a 2020 Highlander for the Wife and a Rav 4 2020 for my everyday get around, Its obvious how many features the Tundra is Behind. Toyota can knock it out of the park if they want..I am not sure of the motivation to keep delaying the new Tundra TNGA platform. I can tell you for sure that Toyota Hybrid is going to be a cornerstone of the new platforms with electric motors as part of the 4X4 drive systems. Making these heavy duty enough will be the key..For all of you who think Diesel is coming, you can kiss those dreams Good bye. Dually and Diesels are not part of The Green Initiative at Toyota and many companies. Blend of Electric & Gas is in for this next decade across the entire Toyota Platform...with the heavy Innovators heading to full EV..Its only a matter of time for EV. The Tundra will have the front of a Rav4/Highlander as its signature Fascia. I believe all the new goodies inside will make it very worthwhile(Heads up display into the Windshield)(1200 WATT JBL Stereo)..Looks like I may have to get the new Rav 4 Prime 300HP coming out this summer while I wait for the New Tundra!! Go Toyota!!

Toyota has proven time and time again with the Tundra that if given enough time they will truly disappoint.
Yes they have had the same truck for 14 years and they have made it cheaper with each one passing. While the costs to the consumer has risen.
Then they trickle in options or features (a few a year) which should have been standard like the larger tank or they add a "Color" just so they can show something new.
If you truly want to know if TOYOTA is serious about their new TUNDRA redesign then look carefully at the Hybrid option they offer for it, if Toyota does not offer a plug-in hybrid version ( couple hundred miles before gas kicks in) then they are just going through the motions again. They did a similar thing with the 2021 Highlander, throw in a cheap hybrid system just to say its hybrid.
I have no confidence in Toyota or the head of their Tundra design team. But I would like to be proven wrong.

People can only hold out for so long. It's been 3 years for me, and I'm going with the Chevy/GMC 2020 Diesel 2500. This thing can tow anything I want. Don't have to worry about what the Toyota will haul, because I know they won't match Chevy or Ford 1/2 tow ratings. I want something for retirement to pull a camper. Don't know what camper yet, that's why Chevy/GMC is the pick for me. I currently own multiple Toyota's and disappointed it takes so long for them to get the same options as others. The new redesign will come out and then Toyota will change the front ends on the others, making the Tundra look old again. Very sad to say I have to let you go........

Been, waiting, and waiting, and waiting....for a next gen Tundra. Mine ( 14' limited DC) is used 60% of the time to tow around my RV. It just "needs" a little more towing capacity to even try to catch up to the Big 3. I have a extended warranty that runs out Jan of 22'. If Toyota goes the route of "Eye Candy" and away from a truck being used to tow or haul, I'll go the route of a F-250 gasser. I'm afraid this Corvid 19 is going to push the next gen Tundra later into 2022 / 23' model years...I'm not going to wait that long..

i loved the way the Tundra looks now, with the all terrain tires, black rims, black step bar! After seeing a glimpse of what the new projected truck would look like, I lost all interest! The bottle nose narrow front does nothin for me! So I decided to go with the 2020 with the small v8! Then I find out you can't get that engine, only the 5.7 which gets a 1 1/2 to 2 miles less to the gallon than advertised! An 8-10 speed transmission may have helped the mileage but they decided to keep the 6 speed! I don't want a Dodge or Nissan, I like the 5.0 In the Ford but they have screwed it's looks up too!! The new Chevy or GMC are looking like an option, I may could tolerate! But may wait and see on the Toyota, but they are dragging their feet!!

I’m disappointed that it has been delayed. I have an ‘18 Tacoma that I love, but is just too small for the family when we get out in it on a weekend excursion. I have been waiting on the new Tundra to roll out before making a decision so I can see if they top the big 3. If they were going to be ready to produce for 2021, I assume, even with the delay to 2022, they could wet our appetite with a leaked photo or late 2020 preview of what’s coming.

I bought a new 2008 Tundra double cab 5.7. I still love the truck. Pulls my 6000 pound trailer well, although the MPG is terrible. It has one wonderful feature that tops all others: It is paid for. Hopefully I can keep this truck another 12 years! Thanks Toyota.

I wanted one more toyota truck for retirement but they do not have what want. Toyota is losing out to the other makers of trucks with options. And it will be another 2 or 3 years before they do anything. I do not really want an electric truck!
