Multiple 2024 Toyota Tacoma Engine Options Should Produce Plenty of Power

Expect 2024 Tacoma to bring extra power with its powertrain choices.

Toyota has been slowly revealing juicy details about the much-anticipated 2024 Tacoma these past few weeks.

Usually on Tuesdays.

The beginning of each week is now giving me even more reason to look forward to Taco Tuesday.

We have seen silhouette views at night, the new Trailhunter overlanding-capable trim level, FOX suspension, a portable JBL Flex speaker system, and intriguing new colors.

Plus, exciting new powertrains we can look forward to.

Current 2023 Tacoma Engines

For this current 2023 model year, buyers can choose between two engine options. First, a 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. torque.

Next, the stronger and more commonly sold 3.5-liter V6 engine. This delivers 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. torque.
While these two choices have been sufficient for many years, Toyota Tacoma fans and enthusiasts have been yelling for better. They are about to get much better.

Tacoma i-FORCE MAX was promised in a previous teaser picture. This, of course, is well-known in Toyota Tundra and Sequoia circles (a twin-turbo V6 engine that gives drivers a whopping 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. torque). Do not expect these crazy numbers with Tacoma 2024.

However, we can look to similar Toyota and Lexus models for clues about what to expect.

For example, I would guess the base 2024 Tacoma engine will be taken from 2023 Highlander. This is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 265 horsepower and 309 lb.-ft. torque.

The i-FORCE MAX Tacoma may have a 2.4-liter turbo, but with electric motor synergy to give it a big boost in performance.

How much power can we potentially expect? Well, Lexus RX 500h utilizes the 2.4-liter turbo with electric motor power and gets 366 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. torque. Toyota Crown Platinum (with Hybrid Max) has similar pairings and delivers 340 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. torque. Also, Grand Highlander (Hybrid Max) offers 362 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. torque with its 2.4-liter turbo and electric motor combo.

We could also see a third or fourth option as well, but this information is hazier right now. Maybe a 2.5-liter hybrid-only (Grand Highlander offers three powertrain options) or even a Toyota Tacoma all-electric. I just do not know right now – that is the beauty of speculating.

Will Toyota Tacoma 2024 bring the same power as its Toyota and Lexus colleagues? Only time will tell.
But when?

2024 Toyota Tacoma Release Date

Details of 2024 Tacoma release date have not been revealed by Toyota. I would anticipate we could learn more “sooner than later” simply based on the frequency of these teasers on a weekly basis.

Production should begin by the end of 2023, but that is pure guesswork on my part at this point.

I’ve had all 3 generations and the 3rd generation Tacomas just had too much hesitation and searched for the correct gear. The engines had plenty of power but lacked in the transmission

That is too bad it is only going to be a hybrid, I have played that game already with Lexus, not going back down that trail, lesson learned. Would most likely buy a 2024 if they offered an all gas engine. Horsepower and torque are not as important to me as maintenance costs, had to replace the batteries on the Lexus, could have bought one of my kids a new Hyundai for the price.
