Something that Chevrolet has been trying to achieve for a long time with the Corvette is a way to make the car a fantastic track beast while maintaining the comfort of a luxury car for those long road trips. Unfortunately you can't have both, not before the introduction of magnetic ride control and the ability to switch between a stiff track tuned suspension and a plush luxury ride on the fly.
Can The 2020 C8 Corvette Do Both? It Sure Can.
Yup. This car has the ability to do that and then some. The Z mode button located on the left hand side of the C8 Corvettes new "square" shaped steering wheel, allows you to save all the presets you want so you can easily flip between your favorite plush mode and jump right into the sport settings you customized by pressing just one single button.
The C8 Corvette has the ability to adjust a few parameters of the car itself. First, we have the Tour, Sport, and Track modes, which of course control the ride of the car but they also control much more than that. These 3 different modes control the following items: the ride stiffness, the throttle responsiveness, the steering feel, the braking ability, and even the digital dash display parameters.
Why The Z Mode Button Is Impressive
The Z mode button offers the ability to quickly change between whatever mode you like to daily drive in and all of the customized settings you prefer for track or race use. Basically, you can choose to have the car in touring mode for your daily driving and then with the touch of a button flip over to your favorite setting for putting down some rubber at the track.
The C8 Corvette has the ability to individually set all of these parameters so just because the car is in Track mode doesn't mean your steering, braking, or digital dash display has to match that setting. This means you can have the stiffest possible suspension with a softer steering or a softer braking ability. It allows you to pick and choose your settings that will be swapped to with a button press.
The C7 Corvette has selectable drive modes similar to this including Tour, Weather, Eco, Sport, and Track, but the mid-engined C8 adds even more user customization. Z mode allows drivers to now mix and match settings for the engine, transmission, and steering beyond these presets. Once you set your individual Z mode settings in the center screen, pressing the steering wheel mounted Z button will activate your favorite combination of performance settings.
At the end of the day this means you can fully customize how the car handles itself on the street and the track. It allows you to have a very capable daily driver as well as a track warrior all in one package. This car is really shaping up to be something special and with the amazing feature that is the Z mode button, it's just that much better.
