Bob Lutz is right-winger! Personally I don't think guys like him should have been given taxpayer $$. I doubt he would have supported the bank bailouts, unless GM needed $ to!
if literally everyone you knew relied on the bailouts to keep their jobs.
i am very right wing in most cases and i strongly supported the bailouts...as i know only a handful of people who wouldnt have been ruined by GM and Chrysler going under.
This is all politics, of course, but I didn't support any of the bailouts. If a company, bank, or even government can't keep itself financed and has made so many mistakes that it is financially ruined, it should just fail. Our nation wasn't founded on "safety nets" and forced resource redistribution (taxation). It was founded on the opposite: individual liberty and anti-tax protesting.
As it is, most of those who were owed money by GM for tangible input (i.e. goods delivered, services rendered) were screwed in favor of those owed money for intangibles. Which is why the Treasury and the UAW ended up with majority ownership stakes and many suppliers got the shaft. I personally know one person who's business was destroyed because he was paid only 30% (3 cents on the dollar) for products delivered to GM.
If I were to buy American today, I would buy Ford since they received no bailouts. As it is, I buy Toyota and Honda because they are actually more American-made than GM or Ford anyway.
I have to agree with Aaron! I don't think it is fair to take taxpayer's money to support companies that have proven themselves to be unsuccessful. Banks, automakers, etc. Most people you talk with, no matter party affiliation, agree on this. Especially when there are vested interested in certain companies doing better than others. Hank Paulson didn't let Goldman Sachs fail!
I was in Japan once (before the Earthquake) visiting a relative. He worked for GM in Japan and was driving a Saab 9-3. He was upset because he had to give up his Saab soon, and drive a GM car. He said, "GM doesn't make anything I want to drive and fits with my lifestyle." I thought that was pretty sad he worked for GM and they couldn't provide him with anything he wanted to drive, and he gets cars leased to him for Free for 1-year. He lived in Tokyo, and you should have seen the parking spaces in the garage!
My friend who worked as a GM tech for awhile used to have a Honda Civic. He said, "That was the best car I ever had!" it got totaled when someone rear-ended him. He then bought a Cavalier, which he hated. Now he works for DC MetroBus, and he is much happier.
BTW - I would have spent the day writing, but I was fixing my mom's Chrysler van aka "The Crapler!" I still need to finish the work tomorrow morning. Something breaks on this car every week and I have taken great care of it. Only 125,000 miles and it is just falling apart. I hate Crapler... I mean Chyrsler!
Not trying to make any angry, just the way I feel. :)
