General Motors

General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is a linchpin of the U.S. automotive industry, selling millions of vehicles every year - 8.3 million in 2018, to be precise – and employing more than 170,000 workers. More familiarly known as GM, the auto company counts iconic brands Buick and Cadillac under its corporate umbrella, as well the more utilitarian GMC brand and the budget-conscious Chevrolet badge.

Formed in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, General Motors has a long history with the Great Lakes State. Alongside the Ford Motor Company, GM’s presence in the region and its creation of popular cars under various brands are some of the main reasons that Detroit is so widely known as Motor City. GM is a Fortune 500 company and frequently appears in the top 25 of that list as one of the largest U.S. corporations by revenue.

Here at Torque News, we cover a wide variety of stories involving General Motors, from new models and announcements to the company’s latest technology developments and electric vehicle initiatives. GM plans to release more than 20 new electric models across its major brands by 2023 and you’ll hear about all of them on this site, as well as the latest and greatest from GM’s existing models.

Earlier this week, news broke regarding the imminent arrival of the first Chevrolet Blazer EVs. They may have already arrived at US dealerships as the first batch left the Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico about two weeks ago. As exciting as that may be, I believe GM may struggle to move large numbers of their newest EV, initially.

With the recent news that both Ford and GM have elected to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for fast, 400V or level 3, electric vehicle (EV) charging, the effort to electrify the American auto fleet has reached a turning point. I think NACS has won the fight and the other fast charging standards will be phased out.

Both GM and Ford have publicly stated they are out to take the lead in moving the world off of fossil fuels and on to an electric vehicle (EV) future. Both have set their sights on beating Tesla, the currently dominant EV brand more or less in every major world auto market. I have been skeptical of their stances and strategy all along. Now, I’ve found some other analysts that agree.

We've all heard about "gifts that keep giving" in response to holiday ads like those for today's Mother's Day. Well, how about a slight change: "gifts that won't go away" regarding the auto airbag recall that was launched nearly 20 years ago and continues today.

A year or so ago, the competitive landscape for electric vehicles (EVs) in the US auto market looked a little different than it does now. This was before the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) revised which plug-in electric vehicles are subsidized by the US federal government. The key brands leading rapidly increasing EV sales have shifted somewhat in the months since, and the top 3 sellers in the US are now: Tesla, General Motors (GM) and Hyundai (if my estimate for Kona EV sales is accurate).

General Motors has either just made a brilliant product design decision, or they’ve just set themselves up for a huge failure, all in an attempt to extract more money from their consumers. I am strongly of the opinion that it is the latter. What is this probable debacle GM is heading toward? Read on to find out.

General Motors plans to offer 7 different EVs, across its family of brands, by December. Those brands are: Chevy, GMC, Cadillac and BrightDrop. Wait, what about Buick? Forget about Buick EVs for this year, GM wants to focus on “last mile” delivery electrification first (to compete with the likes of Ford and others making electric cargo delivery vans and trucks). With that many models on offer, GM is primed to overtake Hyundai Motor Group and Ford as the 2nd largest EV manufacturer in the US market this year.

Some may say that 2022 was the year that electric vehicles (EVs) really took off, saleswise, or (finally) began to rapidly increase market share in the U.S. It is certainly true that electric vehicles sold in larger numbers than ever before in the U.S. last year, and almost every automaker is hurriedly bringing new EVs to market too. But how big are these increases really, and which automakers are capturing the most EV market share?
