Tesla Releases FSD V12 To Internal Employees

The release of Tesla's FSD software to internal employees is an important moment for Tesla. The reason for this is that this is end to end software using nothing but neural nets. Elon Musk has also stated that it feels human.

One thing that is missing from the equation to a poster on X.com, Everyday Astronaut, is updates to Autopilot. He feels that Autopilot needs more love and stated that it is falling behind other manufacturers' driving assist software and that when you rent a Tesla with the outdated basic autopilot, you get a poor customer experience. He also said a Honda minivan does better.

The answer to his concern, is what I feel Whole Mars Catalog mentioned, in that Autopilot will be completely replaced by a basic version of FSD. This basic version of FSD will do all the things that Autopilot did, it will just do them better. There may even be an enhanced basic FSD that does all the things Enhanced Autopilot did.

Look for a removal of Tesla basic Autopilot, probably sometime next year and its replacement with a basic version of FSD software.

How Close To Robotaxis And Autonomous Vehicles Are We?

The big question on my mind - and perhaps other people's minds too, is when will we get autonomous vehicles that don't need a driver? Even though Elon Musk said he feels this version is like a human, we have to see it in action first. It needs to drive like an experienced human or better, and not like a teenager or new driver.

I think we'll see the first driverless autonomous Tesla vehicles driving in the Las Vegas strip underneath in the Boring tunnels. This is a perfect use case because the car simply needs to follow a path and not go out of bounds for it. Tesla can test this over and over and make sure it does it right, and then start offering driverless rides.

I also think that in the short term, we will see what Elon Musk describes as "convoys", which would be a single vehicle like the Tesla Semi having a driver, and then you would have autonomous Tesla Semis following it. Those Semis would offer 40 to 50 feet between them, so other vehicles could pass.

This would be like having trains on the road. I would expect Tesla to try and get this working for the Tesla Semi as soon as possible because it will save a lot of money on costs.

I think we're getting close everyone and even though this has been promised for a number of years, progress is being made on what is arguably the hardest problem in software being attempted to date - a car that can drive itself much safer than a human.
