The 2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost gets 30mpg

We found out late last week that the 2012 Ford Explorer with the EcoBoost engine option would yield a segment leading 28 miles per gallon on the highway and 20 around town and this week, Ford lets us in on the EPA fuel economy ratings for the smaller Ford Edge EcoBoost. The Edge EcoBoost offers 30 miles per gallon on the highway and 21 around town with the same turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder found in the Explorer. This engine makes 240 horsepower and 270lb-ft of torque, sending that power to the front wheels (no AWD option for the EcoBoost Edge) via a six speed automatic transmission and thanks to the lightweight nature of the Edge – the EcoBoost should provide a little sportier ride in the Edge compared to the larger Explorer in addition to offering slightly better fuel economy. For comparison, the 3.5L V6 offered as the standard engine in the Ford Edge makes 285 horsepower but just 253lb-ft of torque while yielding 27mpg on the highway and 19 around town in front wheel drive form so the premium EcoBoost engine option offers better fuel economy all around and more torque. The V6 Edge with all wheel drive V6 Edge reaches fuel economy levels of 25 on the highway and 18 in the city but again, the EcoBoost Edge is not available with 4WD.

Ford Motor Company’s EcoBoost technology has done a fine job of offering vastly improved fuel economy without compromising power. This started with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 in the Ford Taurus SHO and Ford Flex, followed by a popular new EcoBoost package for the bestselling Ford F150 pickup. Ford plans to spread their EcoBoost technology across the entire Ford and Lincoln lineup over the next few years and with the news of CAFÉ requirements jumping to 30mpg for SUVs, Ford Motor Company is seemingly ahead of the game as they offer the most fuel efficient trucks and SUVs on the market today.

The 2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost is the 13th vehicle to reach the 30mpg plateau in the Ford vehicle lineup, joining the following list (City/Highway). Surprisingly, the 2012 Ford Edge is the first EcoBoost powered vehicle to hit the 30mpg level.
