Chromed out Audi R8s raise $1 million for Sir Elton’s charity

Audi initially planned to produce just one of these chromed out 2011 Audi R8 Spyders, powered by a 5.2L V10 and sending 525 horsepower to the wheels – allowing this open air supercar to dash from 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 194 miles per hour. The R8 is an incredible piece of automotive machinery and when you consider the rarity of these factory-built chromed models combined with the fact that the proceeds go to help with Elton John’s Aids Foundation; you can expect them to draw big money.

The first chrome Audi R8 Spyder to sell drew an incredible £250,000, which is $399,225 in US dollars based on the current conversion rate. Next, when the second chrome R8 auction ended, the car was purchased then immediately (and generously) donated back to be auctioned off again; with the second Audi R8 bringing in a total of £370,000 ($591,075 USD) between the two bidders. All said and done, these two donated chrome Audi R8 Spyders raised £620,000 – or $990,078 in US dollars – for the Elton John Aids Foundation.

These two unique Audi R8 Spyders were auctioned off at the home of Sir Elton John and David Furnish at their annual White Tie & Tiara Ball, which helps to raise millions each year for the Elton John Aids Foundation. This charity provides a variety of services including (but not limited to) medication, education, shelter and support to men, women and children in 15 countries around the world.
