Over the past six-month period, online used car retailer Carvana has seen its stock value drop from nearly $300 per share to about $30 per share. According to the New York Stock Exchange, on which the company’s stock is traded, the value of a share of the company's stock has dropped by 88% in the past six months. Carvana’s stock price peaked at over $360 per share in August of 2021. In the first quarter of this year, Carvana posted a half-billion-dollar loss.
Related Story: Used Car Purchased Online From Vroom Goes Horribly Wrong
In Illinois, the company’s license to sell cars was suspended. Like fellow online retailer, Vroom, Carvana customers have claimed that they did not receive the title to the vehicle they purchased from the company, and therefore could not register it.
Two weeks ago, Carvana laid off about 2,500 of its workers - using Zoom. Employee Jay Romero told CBS Newa, "It was a very scary experience. I had no support from anybody — no management, no team leads." According to news reports, workers being laid off were not even allowed to ask questions.
In a summary of Carvana’s troubles, TechCrunch says that the company overbuilt for its sales volume. That is a way of saying that the company has too much overhead and not enough customers.
Torque News looked up Carvana’s rating by the Better Business Bureau and discovered that the headquarters listing is “being updated.” The Florida location of the Carvana has had nearly 4,000 complaints filed by customers over the past three years, with the bulk of those complaints happening in just the last 12 months. Furthermore, despite Carvana advertising on its website that it earns a 4.7 out of 5-star rating for quality, on BBB customers rate the company just two stars. BBB says the Carvana does not earn its accreditation despite being in business for over ten years.
Online car-buying held the promise of eliminating the dreaded used car lot and the hassles associated with haggling over prices. Carvana created buildings intended to look like vending machines. This gives the impression that buying a car is a simple process. As any used car buyer knows, a test drive, review of all maintenance records, a report detailing any accidents, and inspection by one’s own trusted mechanic are always important steps in the process.

I went through the entire online process concerning the paperwork, credit check, etc. And my car never came. I went through the entire process 3 times, and every time on the day the car was suppose to be delivered to me, they would inform me of another delay. After the 3rd disappointment, I went to Carmax and I experienced not even one problem purchasing my vehicle online. If you want to be let down and disappointed, go to Carvana

I purchased a car from our carvana and July 2021. In August the dealer tag they gave me expired. They had me go to my DMV to get another temporary tag. It turns out my state doesn't do that, so I just had expired tags. Carvana told me that if I ask the DMV they should have my information to show me how long it would take to get my new tags. The DMV searched every method they could think of and could find nothing. Every time I tried to call carvana they told me they couldn't tell me anything because a third party did all of their license plate stuff. I asked for the third party's name and they could not give it to me. They just kept telling me it should only be a few more days. I waited another month and a half to get my license plates. During that time carvana had to rent me a car so I didn't drive around with expired tags, but that's still almost 2 months I couldn't drive a car that I was buying. Then August of 2021, I traded that car in to a real dealership for a new car. A couple of months later I get a letter from carvana that they're getting ready to repossess the car I traded in. The dealership sent in the check to pay for my old car, and carvana applied it to someone else's account. The new dealership had already sold my carvana car to someone else and that person couldn't get it licensed because carvana would not send the dealership the title. I would never go through carvana again. Every part of the transaction was a hassle.

Bought my first car, December 2019. Experience was amazing. Delivery, customer service, haweverything. I loved the experience so much that I purchased 5 vehicles to date. I am actively looking for my 6th vehicle.
I am saddened and disappointed Carvana is experiencing financial difficulties. It’s a great concept and I will continue to buy cars from them as long as they are still around

I bought my smart car from carvana in 2017, it was delivered to my home. I drove it and loved it, I paid $1500.00 down payment and had payments of $90.98 a month for 5 years. Great car, no problems, but when I paid it off and wanted to trade it in for a up to date car they wanted my car + 6000.00 + make payments of over $200.00 a month. And everytime I spoke to a different person the price kept going up. So I took my 2014 smartcar to Lowery brothers in Boaz, Al and traded it for a 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport. Smart cars are great cars but they dont cost that kind of money unless they are decked out with all the goodies. They hold 8 gallons of gas and go almost 400 miles to a tank. That's the great part about the car And you can turn around in a parking spot. But Carvana isn't anything like they were in 2017. They will rip you a new one if they can now days. I wont ever buy from them again.

I too had an excellent experience with Carvana. I traded in my 2012 Jeep for a 2020 Nissan Versa. It couldn't have gone any smoother. I highly recommend this company. I hope they make it through whatever problems they are having.

I just purchased an Audi A4 from carvana. I don't think I will ever do that again. They claim that they inspect the vehicles before they buy them. Supposedly they also inspect the vehicles before they sell them to the public. This is not true with my purchase.
When I took the first test drive, I noted that the brakes were pulsating. Scheduled an inspection with the Audi dealership and they discovered not only pitted rotors, but 2 bad wheel bearings, a bent wheel and leak from the thermostat housing. All these repairs would have cost me over $7k. The warranty did pay for most of it, but I still had to pay just over $1000 because the brake pads are a "wear item". If I was purchasing from a dealership, I would have made them change the brake pads before I bought it.
Bottom line: Get it inspected by your own mechanic!

I purchased a car from carvana four years ago, including a trade in of my previous vehicle, and was extremely satisfied. I think perhaps in those days they were eager to capture market share so provided great service and great trade in prices. Perhaps the realities of scaling up proved too costly and difficult?

It's very easy for dealerships to get into title trouble. Many used cars are purchased by a dealership without a title in hand. There is generally a lien held by a bank or leasing company that needs to be paid off first.
There is nothing automated about this process, it takes attention and manpower. This is a typical problem for a poorly run auto dealership, why did they let it get so bad that their license in IL was suspended?

Hoorible and stressing experience with Carvana. I just will say that they took an unauthorized payment withdrawal from my bank account, after I paid them with a cashier check, getting my bank account in red. And it was imposible to talk to any responsible individual in the company.

Last year I traded in my 2012 Camaro for a 2018 Camaro and it was a very good experience. First off, they gave me 10k more than local dealers offered. On the flip side, I know I overpaid about 2k on the new car, but I still ended up ahead...No problems with delivery or getting the title. Had the car thoroughly inspected at my local Chevy dealership and not a single problem mechanically. The only issue I saw, was a scratch on the hood and one of the side skirts was sagging. Carvana paid to fix both issues...One year later and my only complaint is that the new car smell is fading.

The worst company ever! I had my car less than 4 months and the car stopped working and they are trying to blame. I have a beautiful bmw 535i paperweight and they knew the sold me a bad car. All they said "Why didn't you get it checked in the 7 days?" Who gets a new car checked out in 7 days, when you pride yourself on 150 POINT CHECK? Please do not buy from them!

I purchased my second car from Carvana last month. The previous purchase was two years ago. Both times I received everything promised and my registration information within the 7 day window. Great experience completely different from previous car dealership interactions that were horrible. Before going through Carvana I dreaded the car purchasing experience only slightly less than going to the Dentist.

Carvana is the worst and i mean The worst car buying company ever I bought my car back in February 2019 and what I thought would be an amazing experience of buying a car I was totally wrong since I’ve had my car I check the Carfax history and the Carfax history seem to be pristine it was only two other owner is listed on the car and the car was once used as a rental car and the car had a good mileage on it up-to-date on maintenance it seemed like and everything looked like it was in very good condition here I am in 2022 and i’m driving on the highway at 72 mph and my car starts to shake uncontrollably and then the check engine light comes on as I pulled over to the fire station because I was taking classes for EMT I had to call a tow truck from my insurance company to tow my car to my house which was $215 out of pocket because I was 15 miles out of range then tow the car again to the dealership which was the Kia dealership because I have a 2017 Kia Sorrento no Kia did a diagnostic test and come to find out Kia told me that there was a broken spark plug on my car that was previously put on the car and because I was driving the car so much all the wear and tear on the car just broke the spark plug and the piece is broke off into the engine and I’m just like what so I’m like you’re telling me that the previous owner of this car put a damn spark plug on my car and because of me driving it so much that the spark plug eventually broke off and pieces of it went into the engine so now I would have to come up with 6500 for a new engine and then on top of that it wouldn’t even make sense to pay the 6500 for the new engine because the engine for the make and model of that specific car was on recall so I have been stuck at home from since March 2022 I’m a single mom with a disabled child I’ve had no transportation I have lost work I have been unable to take my child to doctor appointments the Kia dealership had no sympathy for me Carvana had no sympathy for me and I constantly called Carvana explain to them my situation and told him hey this is the car you sold me like what’s going on like I’m not understanding I’m so confused so I was highly pissed I would never ever recommend this company to anyone honestly at all like their customer service is horrible even the documents that they gave me my signature is not even on the documents that they gave me so I’m not even sure like this loan that I have for the car is even valid at all because the documents on the contracts are not even signed with my signature so this company and all is very shady and it was just a horrible experience and I would just never recommend them to anyone and they should be personally sued

Car vending.
Used car market is so confusing and complicated.
Title should be clean and no bank lien.
With title being clouded no way vehicle can be transferred at any dmv.
So many layers of clerical and administrative mistakes.
Caravana is a toast.
Better learn from reas estate giant Zillow.
Get lessons from carmax and sell inventory to them.

I purchased a car from carvsna last year and went through 2 dealer plates before I got my actual plates. I bought an extended warranty for nothing. When I took it to a garage carvana plan told me to go, they always said nothing's wrong. So I bought it to my garage and yes the front end needed fixing all along. Which the warranty doesn't cover. So I wasted my money. So many problems with this company. They rip you off
