Why do I cover the Subaru WRX NBR performance car every year? Because the Nurburgring 24-hour Race is the most grueling test for Subaru and the WRX sports car. Subaru will transfer what they learn on the track to their next-generation vehicles like the Forester, Crosstrek, Outback, and other family vehicles, not just their sports cars.
Subaru Corporation and its motorsport subsidiary Subaru Tecnica International (STI) uncovered the 2024 Subaru WRX NBR at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2024. Here are the new images from the show.
Where did the Subaru WRX NBR finish the Nurburgring 24-hour Race last year? Subaru and Subaru Tecnica International (STI) entered the 51st Nurburgring 24-hour Race expecting to win like they have so many times. The Subaru WRX NBR Challenge car missed winning and finished in second place.
The WRX NBR received upgrades last year to the newly-tuned STI 2.4-liter direct injection turbocharged Boxer engine along with its new next-gen body.
Previously, the WRX STI NBR performance car was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The 2.0-liter engine produced 335 horsepower and 340 ft-lbs of torque. However, Subaru did not reveal the specs of the new 2.4-liter engine.
The 2024 Nurburgring 24-Hour Race
The 52nd Nurburgring 24-Hour Race will take place in Germany on May 30-June 2, 2024, and Subaru will compete in the SP4T class with the Subaru WRX NBR Challenge race car.
The Team General Manager, Hideharu Tatsumi, and the Team Manager, Takuya Sawada, will lead the team. Carlo van Dam (Netherlands), Tim Schrick (Germany), Kota Sasaki (Japan), and a new driver, Rintaro Kubo (Japan), will be driving for the team.
The 2024 WRX NBR gets four new upgrades.
Compared to the 2023 race car, Subaru says the 2024 car has four improvements.
- renewed the front stabilizer bracket fastening axial force
- exhaust manifold structure to improve reliability
- front and rear irregular-shaped aluminum wheels with optimized rim shapes
- updated aerodynamic parts
Subaru says the renewed front stabilizer bracket fastener will improve axel force, and the exhaust manifold structure will improve reliability. Driving performance will also be enhanced by equipping front and rear irregular-shaped aluminum wheels with optimized rim shapes. And the updated aero parts in various places will improve aerodynamics.
Subaru says, “With the enhanced overall performance, Subaru aims to win the SP4T class.” In addition, eight service technicians selected from Subaru dealerships around Japan will again join the team to support the Race.
