With surging new car prices, there are good choices for shoppers looking for an affordable new model under $25 000 this fall. Recent tests by Consumer Reports (by subscription) have identified six safe cars offering good performance, fuel efficiency, and affordability.
The six top-rated new cars by Consumer Reports for shoppers are the Nissan Sentra, with a score of 77. The Toyota Corolla is second (77), The 2022 Subaru Impreza third (75), Mazda 3 fourth (75), Honda Civic fifth (74), and Hyundai Elantra sixth (75).

The 2022 Subaru Impreza is picked as a top model for its quiet, roomy cabin, ride comfort "that puts some luxury cars to shame," user-friendly controls, and its standard all-wheel-drive.

Shoppers looking for a Subaru Impreza may not find the trim and color they want. The microchip shortage has limited production, and inventory is at an all-time low. We checked with a large volume Subaru retailer in the west, and they have no 2022 Impreza models on their lot.
The largest volume retailer in California has four models available to sell, and a retailer in Florida has one new 2022 Impreza on their lot.
What should Impreza customers do if they want a new compact sedan or hatchback? Many buyers are ordering the trim level, color, and options and waiting for their new model to arrive from Subaru of Indiana Automotive, where they are manufactured.
How long will customers wait for their new model? If you order a new car today, it could be November or December before your new vehicle is shipped to the Subaru retailer.
What's next for the Impreza?
If you are willing to wait, the Subaru Impreza will get a complete redesign for the 2023 model year. It will come with new safety technology, possibly a more fuel-efficient 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, and a new cabin design.
