Which used Subaru models are the best for shoppers in 2023? According to an iSeeCars report, the best used cars and SUVs under $15,000 you can buy this year include three Subaru models making the shortlist.
The 2013 Subaru Forester, and 2013 Subaru Outback are the best two SUVs, and the 2014 Subaru Legacy is a best car pick and ranked among the best.
To make the list, vehicles had to score high on long-term reliability, value retention, and the highest average safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). iSeeCars scored the cars on a scale of one to ten.
The best used SUVs under $15,000
iSeeCars says the 2013 Subaru Outback midsize SUV is the best used SUV pick under $15,000. The Outback has an overall score of 8.8, ranking it the number one best used SUV model. The 2013 Outback has an average used car price of $13,523.
There is an exception. Consumer Reports says to avoid the 2013 Outback.
We caution Outback buyers because Consumer Reports (by subscription) says used car shoppers should avoid the 2013 Outback because it's the least reliable Subaru model. In addition, the 2013 Subaru Outback history report reveals 12 safety recalls indicated by the NHTSA. Nevertheless, Consumer Reports give the 2013 Outback a 3/5 for reliability.
Everyday 2013 Outback problems include oil leaks, faulty airbags, and transmission issues. It's important to note the problems with the 2013 Subaru Outback usually take place at relatively low mileage. Read the complete used Subaru model report here.
What used Outback models should you consider?
Consumer Reports says 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 Subaru Outback midsize SUVs have improved reliability scores of 4/5 or higher, with the 2017 model year being the best for used car shoppers with a 5/5 reliability rating.
2013 Subaru Forester
iSeeCars says the 2013 Subaru Forester compact SUV is another best used SUV pick under $15,000. The Forester has an overall score of 8.7, ranking it the number two best used SUV model. The 2013 Forester has an average used car price of $12,970.
Other iSeeCars used SUVs to consider
iSeeCars includes the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe (8.5), 2014 Hyundai Tucson (8.4), 2013 Mazda CX-9 (8.4), 2013 Nissan Pathfinder (8.4), 2013 Mazda CX-5 (8.3), 2013 Nissan Murano (8.2), 2014 Kia Sportage (8.1), and 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander (8.1).
2014 Subaru Legacy
iSeeCars says the 2014 Subaru Legacy is another good used car pick under $15,000. The Legacy has an overall score of 8.6, ranking it the sixth-best used car model. The 2014 Legacy has an average used car price of $13,365.
The 2014 Subaru Legacy, 2013 Outback, and 2013 Forester are good used car picks, according to iSeeCars data, if you can find a well-maintained, low-mileage model. But you should only buy the 2013 Outback if you have it thoroughly checked by a certified Subaru technician.
Are you looking for a new car?
iSeeCars ranks the 2023 Subaru Impreza as the number one new car under $20,000. In addition, Impreza gets an overall quality score of 8.6, a reliability score of 8.0, a retained value score of 8.7, and a safety score of 9.0.
The average new 2023 Impreza compact car price is $23,610. The average 3-year-old used car price is $23,238, according to iSeeCars data. A new Base Impreza trim level is priced under $20,000 at $19,795 (not including dealer fees). Read the complete report in the link below.
Our take
It is a better value to buy a new 2023 Impreza now because Subaru is offering incentives to move the last remaining 2023 models before the next-generation 2024 Impreza hatchback arrives this spring. So hurry because the 2023 models are selling fast.
