You would think Subaru would sit Travis Pastrana down for the next two Rally America races and let David Higgins achieve a perfect season with little competition. David Higgins and Craig Drew will be joined by Travis Pastrana and co-driver Chrissie Beavis at the Ojibwe Forests Rally event this weekend, August 27-29 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Pastrana will be pushing hard to win the Ojibwe Forests Rally and he could upset Higgins perfect season. Higgins and Drew have won the first six events thus far in the 2015 Rally America series and with two more rounds to run, have a chance to go undefeated and earn a ‘perfect season.' The last perfect season in the USA was earned by American rallying legend and current Subaru Rally Team USA team manager John Buffum in 1987.
Higgins has now mathematically secured his fifth consecutive Rally America Championship title, but he can get a perfect season with two more wins which would be a big accomplishment. Last month he beat rival Ken Block and Subaru teammates Pastrana and Beavis joined them on the podium in third position. Pastrana ran an incredible race and if not for incurring time penalties, he may have won the race.
Ojibwe Forests Rally roads are fast and smooth and the weather forecast is calling for great weather. Much of this rally is run at night and it will present a good challenge for Higgins and Pastrana. Here’s what Subaru knows about Higgins from the last five championship seasons. Higgins does better when he is challenged. Higgins is a fierce competitor and won’t let up just because he has secured his fifth consecutive Rally America Championship title. The intense driving lights cutting through the darkness will be like Higgins’ laser focus this weekend.
Ojibwe Forests Rally starts tomorrow and runs August 27-29. Will Pastrana driving his SRT USA 2014 Subaru WRX STI keep David Higgins driving the 2015 Subaru WRX STI from having a perfect season? Stay tuned.
