Which new subcompact SUVs have the most cargo space? A recent report from Car and Driver says the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek ranks one of the best small SUVs for cargo room. Compact SUV shoppers want a roomy, comfortable cabin, and they want ample cargo space.
Car and Driver says there are nineteen subcompact SUVs on the market and thirty-two if you include luxury models. Which models have the most cargo space to carry luggage, groceries, bicycles, and outdoor gear? Car and Driver just ranked the top twelve small SUVs.
The 12 New Subcompact Crossovers and SUVs with the Most Cargo Space
In order of least to best in cargo room according to Car and Driver, the Kia Niro EV (53 cubic feet with the seats down18 cubic feet with the seats up) is number ten, followed by the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek (55/20), Mitsubishi Outlander Sport (49/21), Nissan Kicks (32/25), Chevrolet Trailblazer (54/25), Buick Encore (48/18), Kia Soul (62/24), Kia Seltos (62/26), Jeep Renegade (50/18), and Honda HR-V (58/24).
C&D says they ranked each vehicle by how many carry-on bags they can hold with all seats folded flat. They also included the total cargo volume in cubic feet with the rear seats up. "We've used the rear cargo area with the seats in use as the tiebreaker because every vehicle on this list holds at least 18 carry-ons," says C&D.
Consumer Reports recently ranked the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek one of the seven best compact SUVs to have the roomiest and most comfortable cabin. The models were ranked in order of roominess, comfort, and ease of access; all score high in reliability, road-test scores, and safety features.
The 2021 Honda CR-V ranked number one, followed by the 2021 Subaru Forester, 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, Toyota RAV4, 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, Lexus NX, and Mazda CX-5.
How much cargo space does the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek have?
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek measures closer to 21 cubic feet (20.8) with the seats up and 55.3 cubes with the rear seats folded flat. The Crosstrek also comes standard with all-wheel-drive, where most other small SUVs are front-drive with all-wheel-drive, an option for which you pay extra.
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek ranks high in cargo space compared with other small SUVs. In our estimation, we would rate the Crosstrek number three best for the overall cargo room.
