A new study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) says the 2022 Subaru Outback is one of the two most satisfying midsize SUVs to owners. CR says they looked at how vehicles satisfied their owners in terms of value, comfort, styling, driving experience, and infotainment ease-of-use.
The 2022 Subaru Outback scored 73 points in the overall ranking among 2-Row SUVs to be the most satisfying in its category. The Jeep Wrangler also gets a score of 73. What is the least satisfying 2-Row SUV? The Honda Passport scores lowest with an overall score of 57 points.
In CR’s ownership scores, the Outback is Subaru’s highest-ranked model and is one of the most satisfying with an overall owner satisfaction of 4/5. The Outback gets a 2/5 for value, 5/5 in interior comfort, 5/5 in styling, 5/5 in driving dynamics, and 1/5 for infotainment. In-car infotainment refers to the ease of using the vehicle’s electronics systems and Bluetooth.
The Jeep Wrangler gets a 1/5 for value, 1/5 in interior comfort, 5/5 in styling, 3/5 in driving dynamics, and 3/5 for infotainment. The Honda Pilot gets a 1/5 for value, 4/5 in interior comfort, 4/5 in styling, 4/5 in driving dynamics, and 2/5 for infotainment.
Consumer Reports says they ask car owners whether they would buy the same car again if given the chance, which also goes into each models’ scores.
In a recent American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) ranking, Subaru ranked number two overall behind Honda for mainstream car brands.
In the ACSI study, Subaru and the Outback scored higher than all other mainstream automakers in the vehicle safety category. Among mainstream brands, drivers are less impressed with their vehicle's safety systems than a year ago, but Subaru still rates best in class among all mainstream vehicles now five straight years.

The 2022 Subaru Outback earned the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2-Row SUV also gets a Five Star Safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

CR rates the Outback a 2/5 for its value which is surprising for its lower trim levels affordability.The 2022 Outback comes in eight trim levels; the base trim is priced from $27,845, Premium ($30,270), Limited ($34,720), Touring ($38,620), Onyx Edition XT ($36,270), new for 2022, Outback Wilderness ($38,120), Limited XT ($39,120), and Touring XT ($41,070). Pricing includes $1,125 destination and delivery fees.
