Imagine buying a new Chevrolet Silverado pickup with only 11,000 miles on it. It won't move forward or backward.
Rachel Brent owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-liter with a 10-speed transmission. She posted her story about a failed transmission on the Chevy Silverado Owner's Facebook page. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case for the new 2024 Silverado.
She says, "My 2024 Chevy Silverado won't shift into forward or reverse. Now the dealer says the transmission has failed, and they must keep it for three months, minimum."
I recently wrote a story about a 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition owner who has replaced her 10-speed transmission twice. Her first transmission lasted 80,000 miles, and the second lasted only 10,000 miles. Check out her story here.
Back to Rachel's 2024 Chevy Silverado
Rachel says, "I bought a new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. I have now had two occasions where the truck shuts off and says put in neutral to restart. The first time, I was parked about to get gas, and the last time, I was still rolling to park at home."
"Both times, it restarted with no issue. Has anyone heard of this before? I will call the dealer on Friday, but now I'm scared to drive it if it happens while driving at a higher speed."
"My Silverado 5.3L has a 10-speed transmission with only 11,000 miles. Today, I came out of the grocery store, cranked my truck, put it in reverse, and it wouldn't move. It would go forward and wouldn't move where I put it in reverse."
"It revved it up, but it wouldn't budge. I tried doing this several times. I pushed it out of the parking spot with the help of a very nice stranger and could go forward, but once I got to around 15 to 20 mph, the engine started revving itself up and then made a loud bang. So, I pulled over and sat there for a few minutes, then tried putting it in reverse again, and it worked perfectly."
"I have since driven about 40 miles to get home, and it's driving like nothing has ever happened. I am calling the dealer first thing in the morning, but does anyone know what could have caused this? I am at a complete loss."
UPDATE: Another GM 10-speed Transmission Failure
Rachel's transmission finally fails, and she takes it to the dealer.
Rachel shares, her sense of helplessness. "Now I’ve discovered that my truck has a serious transmission issue. I’ve gone back and forth with Chevrolet, and they keep giving me vague responses like they're 'going to work on it' and will get back to me. I'm on day eight without a vehicle and with no end in sight,"
She's not happy with Chevrolet. "Unfortunately, I have to wait until it's been in the shop for 30 days to take legal action, but that's certainly coming!" she declares, her anger towards the company unmistakable.
"Now the Chevrolet dealer says my truck will be in the shop for three months minimum because the transmission valve cover is on backorder."
What are Other Silverado Owners Saying?
Patrick Postle says, My 2021 wouldn't shut off when I put it in park. It kept prompting me to "put it in park," So, I took it to the dealer, and the warranty covered it. It had a bad shift solenoid.
George Kulesza - Mine did the same thing. The valve body assembly went bad on mine, and they are on backorder with no ETA on the part. Oh, by the way, I only had mine for two weeks. I'm pretty pissed.
GM Issues a Recall
In November 2024, the NHTSA and GM issued a recall for the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks; however, the recall only involved vehicles equipped with diesel engines, not the 5.3-liter V8.
GM faces a class action lawsuit over defective transmissions
The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions.
The lawsuit covers approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.
Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and the newer Silverado and Sierra trucks?
Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.
According to discussions on Reddit, there are reports of transmission issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra, with users mentioning problems like torque converter failures, "blown valve bodies," and concerns about the transmission running too hot, leading to potential premature wear and tear, particularly when towing heavy loads. Some users even claim these issues are frequent enough to warrant other potential class action lawsuits against GM.
Final Thoughts and Questions For Silverado and Sierra Truck Owners
General Motors has not fixed the problem with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra truck transmissions.
To make the problem worse, GM doesn't have the parts to fix the transmissions, so customers like Rachel have to wait months for their new trucks to be fixed.

I bought a 24 chevy colorado, brand new. My brakes failed at 190 miles. It happened when I was leaving my driveway so fortunately I was going slow, but pushing the brake to the floor did very little. I had to pump the pedal to get it to stop and holding the pedal to the floor wouldn't keep it from idling forward.

I have a rubbing/vibration in the driveline between ~20mph and ~42mph, sounds like a groan similar to driving over rumble strips, but it matches the shifts in the transmission. Determined it will go away when I engage the front differential, in Auto or 4H. Dealer is aware and acknowledged they can replicate, but was told they cannot find the issue and it’ll need to get worse to address. This isn’t a turn the radio up noise, once I hear/feel it, it ruins the drive.

I have a 2015 Silverado high country. I bought it used with a certified warranty in October 2018. It's been in the shop at least a dozen times for transmission issues. They put a better trans fluid which helped some put a new remanufactured trans in. It still shifts hard and shudders.I know it's a bad torque converter but they won't fix or replace. The last thing they told me is that it is the characteristic of the truck in other words it's normal.

I don't think anyone having problems with their transmission should have to make any payments on their vehicles until it's fixed. The payments should be taken care of while the vehicle is out of commission.
Or GM should buy back the vehicle.

I've been lucky si far but now my 3l Duramax has 75k. If indeed the transmission control valve wears over time as my recall notification states, I could be in danger because I drive at highway speeds the majority of the time. My 21 Silverado was great... Until 77k miles and the transmission died. Waited months for parts, but when they installed the new transmission, it failed. Another two month wait for parts, and now it has failed. My truck has been down since 10/1/24 with several more months waiting on more parts. Although I have zero confidence that my truck will ever be fully repaired.

Apparently GM can't make a transmission that runs in 4 auto all the time without blowing up.
Nobody else has a problem with it.
And living in the north having 4auto engaged for 6 months out of the year is essentially a MUST. Haven't seen the pavement on our street since November

My trans has been an issue from day one.
U have the new body 2019 5.3 V8 / 8 speed trans.
Delayed response, hard shift, launches Fwd when parking, a vibration, and sometimes a hesitation like a slip. The only thing that Chevy / Dealership has done to address the issue was change the fluid a few times and 'reprogramming' the trans.
I get the feeling they are waiting for the warranty to expire, then I will get the real story, that of course i will have to pay for.

I have a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 w/3.0 diesel. 33000 miles. Tranny started slipping so went to a local Chevrolet dealer. Their transmission guy said 2 solenoids are sticking. He relayed it was a common issue and has killed a lot of transmissions. The parts are backorder with no timeframe. Could be 2 months could be 8 months. Seems odd they have parts for new trucks but not for warranty.

When I went to the dealer and told the service writer what was going on he said immediately it’s the transmission valve body I have three trucks here now waiting on parts, it’s a three month wait
I was on vacation 2k miles from home
The dealer just kinda shrugged their shoulders, it sucks to be you
So i traded and lost money
My thoughts
I have to get home
Vacation is ruined
Spend endless hours on phone trying to straighten this out

I also bought a 2013 Chevy Silverado from a dealership. Didn’t even have this truck 1 year. This truck only had 70,000 miles on. The transmission blew while driving. Took it to the dealership and they said there was nothing they could do. Not even the 100,000 mile factory warranty would even work. Got rid of it and bought another truck from same dealership. 2023 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. Jan 2025 not even a year after buying this truck my transmission blew in that truck as well. They had my truck for 1 month. GM needs to get this problem under control. There is obviously an issues with their trucks because I got 2 chevys in 2 year that have bad transmission.

I purchased a brand new 2023 Silverado with the 5.3 and 10 speed transmission in January 2024. At 23,000 kilometers I have had all lifters replaced, bank 1 cylinder head replaced, transmission replaced and I'm on my 3rd torque converter. The transmission still shudders, and the rpm needle has a major fluctuation. The dealership tells me that the truck is running normal and within parameters... That is their go to line when they failed to repair the truck and have no clue as to what is wrong with the truck! NORMAL AND WITHIN PARAMETERS!! GM knows that they are manufacturing and selling crap and they don't care! There needs to be a lemon law in British Columbia Canada, to protect customers when they are sold a piece of shit!
