Imagine buying a new Chevrolet Silverado pickup with only 11,000 miles on it. It won't move forward or backward.
Rachel Brent owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-liter with a 10-speed transmission. She posted her story about a failed transmission on the Chevy Silverado Owner's Facebook page. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case for the new 2024 Silverado.
She says, "My 2024 Chevy Silverado won't shift into forward or reverse. Now the dealer says the transmission has failed, and they must keep it for three months, minimum."
I recently wrote a story about a 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition owner who has replaced her 10-speed transmission twice. Her first transmission lasted 80,000 miles, and the second lasted only 10,000 miles. Check out her story here.
Back to Rachel's 2024 Chevy Silverado
Rachel says, "I bought a new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. I have now had two occasions where the truck shuts off and says put in neutral to restart. The first time, I was parked about to get gas, and the last time, I was still rolling to park at home."
"Both times, it restarted with no issue. Has anyone heard of this before? I will call the dealer on Friday, but now I'm scared to drive it if it happens while driving at a higher speed."
"My Silverado 5.3L has a 10-speed transmission with only 11,000 miles. Today, I came out of the grocery store, cranked my truck, put it in reverse, and it wouldn't move. It would go forward and wouldn't move where I put it in reverse."
"It revved it up, but it wouldn't budge. I tried doing this several times. I pushed it out of the parking spot with the help of a very nice stranger and could go forward, but once I got to around 15 to 20 mph, the engine started revving itself up and then made a loud bang. So, I pulled over and sat there for a few minutes, then tried putting it in reverse again, and it worked perfectly."
"I have since driven about 40 miles to get home, and it's driving like nothing has ever happened. I am calling the dealer first thing in the morning, but does anyone know what could have caused this? I am at a complete loss."
UPDATE: Another GM 10-speed Transmission Failure
Rachel's transmission finally fails, and she takes it to the dealer.
Rachel shares, her sense of helplessness. "Now I’ve discovered that my truck has a serious transmission issue. I’ve gone back and forth with Chevrolet, and they keep giving me vague responses like they're 'going to work on it' and will get back to me. I'm on day eight without a vehicle and with no end in sight,"
She's not happy with Chevrolet. "Unfortunately, I have to wait until it's been in the shop for 30 days to take legal action, but that's certainly coming!" she declares, her anger towards the company unmistakable.
"Now the Chevrolet dealer says my truck will be in the shop for three months minimum because the transmission valve cover is on backorder."
What are Other Silverado Owners Saying?
Patrick Postle says, My 2021 wouldn't shut off when I put it in park. It kept prompting me to "put it in park," So, I took it to the dealer, and the warranty covered it. It had a bad shift solenoid.
George Kulesza - Mine did the same thing. The valve body assembly went bad on mine, and they are on backorder with no ETA on the part. Oh, by the way, I only had mine for two weeks. I'm pretty pissed.
GM Issues a Recall
In November 2024, the NHTSA and GM issued a recall for the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks; however, the recall only involved vehicles equipped with diesel engines, not the 5.3-liter V8.
GM faces a class action lawsuit over defective transmissions
The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions.
The lawsuit covers approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.
Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and the newer Silverado and Sierra trucks?
Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.
According to discussions on Reddit, there are reports of transmission issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra, with users mentioning problems like torque converter failures, "blown valve bodies," and concerns about the transmission running too hot, leading to potential premature wear and tear, particularly when towing heavy loads. Some users even claim these issues are frequent enough to warrant other potential class action lawsuits against GM.
Final Thoughts and Questions For Silverado and Sierra Truck Owners
General Motors has not fixed the problem with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra truck transmissions.
To make the problem worse, GM doesn't have the parts to fix the transmissions, so customers like Rachel have to wait months for their new trucks to be fixed.

I own a 2024 Chevy Silverado 5.3L V8 10 speed. At 9,000 miles I had shifting problems which required a new transmission. It was 2 months before I got my truck back. I was constantly on top of the situation and wouldn't leave the dealership alone. It's absolutely ridiculous that consumers have to go through this and pay such high prices for their vehicles.

I have a 2014 silverado 5.3 with all the issues everyone is having. Brought my truck to the dealer in 2016 first time with issues hard shift and down shifted hard with only 33000 miles on it. They said there is nothing wrong normal. From that point it has been to several dealers and found forum that there was recall with vin number and said mine was not pay off recall. Everything people have gone through was the same. In 2024 with 100000 miles recall transmission finally went. Brought to a local transmission dealer and he said he was surprised this was not on the recall list because he has changed over a hundred trucks with my issue in my town. Called my dealer last place was brought. They said well you got 100000 out of it. But this has been issues and they have all records. NOTHING. $6500 later and had to upgrade to shut off 4 cylinder kick down no issues. Horrible that everyone has to go this only to have dealer send you on wild goose chase only to say well that's normal but won't cover it.

I've had 2 2020 silverados with 3.0 diesels and 10 spd transmissions. The 1st i bought new and transmission failed at 80k. They replaced it under warranty but i sold it soon after because it spooked me, since I travel for a living and i couldn't trust it anymore. Then, after missing it (I truly loved that truck) I bought another used truck with 90k miles. I figured it had lasted longer than my original truck, si it must have been a fluke. Nope. Within 2 months it's transmission blew. They had it for 7 weeks to try to fix valve body. Then I got it back. And it blew again 2 months later. A different dealership had it for 5 weeks. The put a new transmission in. It lasted about 1 month and blew again. Dealership replaced again, but this time they figured out why it blew (dealership tech error during install). I've since put another 110k on it (truck now has over 210 k) and it's running strong, but I am worried as now if it goes. There's no warranty left

It's not that they don't have the parts to fix them, that's a bold faced lie. No they don't even sell the specs for the aftermarket part replacement companies, can't even get a simple seal for the 10 speed. It's a sealed transmission, you have to send it to chevy to get fixed. Total BS

I am to waiting over a month for the valve body too! No one can tell me when the part and truck will be fixed! I'm paying on a truck that can't be used. I'm hearing it's months not days or weeks that the part will be in. Someone has to hold GM accountable for this as they have known this issue!

Hi I have owned three GMC Sierra’s so far.
My latest one is a 2017 SLT 5.3 with 8 speed automatic. Since owning the truck in 2022 with 119k in Canada, i have had this bump or thump when going into second gear also shift down to second coming to a sop or the lights.
I have changed the fluid in transmission wit Mobil 1 Blue decal the correct one and it helped but has not totally gone. Seems like Canada is not being bothered with fixing this issue. Why. I am hesitant to buy my next Denali, which is what i wanted in the first place. Five tested had a severe vibration from transmission on highway.
Thank you

I suspect the best fix will be to install an adapter and use a Dodge 8 speed transmission. There is a kit to adapt a LS to the Dodge transmission, but you will need a modified driveshaft. It seems the "hot ticket" is a Chevy LS, backed up with a Dodge transmission, connected to a Ford differential. The bonehead prize would be a Ford ecoboom hooked up to a GM 10 speed transmission and a Dodge differential. Fortunately nobody makes any of the adapters to do this.

Had to replace my transmission three times and last time I took it in I brought it back home with there were more problems and the transmission went out again. I don’t understand what GM is doing really bad vehicle. I have to wait for them to fix it. God knows how long that’s gonna takethe worst part of it. All is that I’m still paying for the truck and I can’t even drive it GM needs to refund everybody back for their trucks.

My 2024 Chevy Silverado has 13,200 miles and same issue. Wouldn't go into reverse so pushed in the parking lot. It went into drive and when I went to drive it I heard a loud pop and then it went into limp mode. It's currently at the dealership and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I was lucky enough to get a loner equinox. I'm hoping this will be a quick issue but after research it sure seems like it will not be. Not sure what other action I can take.
