My 2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid With 10K Miles Is Sitting At the Dealer With Engine Failure, Needless To Say I Regret My Purchase

Another Toyota Tundra Hybrid truck owner is fuming because of its engine problems. Tony bought a 2024 Tundra Hybrid with an engine failure at 10K miles on the new pickup. And that's not the only problem with the truck. Here is Tony's incredible story.

Toyota's reliability is taking a brutal hit.

I've covered numerous stories of Toyota Tundra owners who have faced engine failure. Tony Volpe, the owner of a 2024 Toyota Tundra Capstone Hybrid, is just one of many who have had engine problems with their new trucks.

Tony tells the story on a 2023-2025 Toyota Tundra Owners Facebook post of how he's had so many problems that he now regrets the purchase of the Toyota Tundra.

He says, "I'm a first-time Toyota Tundra owner. I purchased it new out of the showroom. It's a 2024 Tundra Capstone Hybrid. I have had nothing but problems."

Imagine buying a new Toyota Tundra because you've heard about Toyota's excellent reliability. It's your first Tundra, and you like everything about the truck. However, with only 4,000 miles, the truck's low oil warning light comes on.

You immediately take it to the dealer, and they change the oil. Or maybe they just add oil? Then, with 9,000 miles on the truck, the low oil warning light comes on again. It's back to the dealer for another oil change.

Now, the Truck's Engine Has No Power

You drive the truck to work a few days later, and multiple lights on the dash light up, and the truck has no power. Now, it has to be towed to the dealer. They tell you that three cylinders in the engine have failed.

The dealer has a corporate technician look at your truck and says it now needs to have the engine rebuilt. They have the truck for a week, and you think it's finally fixed. However, after only another 1,400 miles, the low oil warning light is glowing again.

It's easy to imagine the frustration and disappointment Tony is feeling. He's left wondering what kind of truck he bought, and this sentiment is echoed by many other owners who are also facing similar issues.

Here's what Tony said.

He says, "At 4000 miles, my truck said low engine oil. So, I took it to the dealer right away. "They changed the oil. The oil was low again at 9,000 miles, so I took it to the dealer, and they changed the oil. I drove it to work, and my dash looked like a Christmas tree a couple of days later, and it had no power. I had it towed to the dealer and they found out cylinders one, two, and four had failed."

"A Toyota corporate tech out of Baltimore came to the dealer and said to rebuild the motor at the dealer. I got my truck back, put 1,400 miles on it, and the low engine oil light came on again. It was also shifting rough and did not sound good idling."

"So, I took it to the dealer again. Oh, wait, and the front differential is bad. Needless to say, I regret my purchase of the Toyota Tundra. I'm waiting to hear what other problems are going on."

Tony Is Not the Only Tundra Hybrid Owner With Engine Issues

Take Kirk Cashen, for instance, who purchased a new 2025 Tundra only to have the engine fail on him only 1,528 miles in. He says this on the 2023-2025 Toyota Tundra Owners Facebook page.

Kirk says, "I have a 2025 TRD PRO Hybrid. So, I just bought this beast in December. I headed out on a trip to Maryland, and we made it about 400 miles. It broke down with only 1528 miles on the truck. I'm sitting at the Toyota dealership with a locked motor waiting on it. They said I needed a new motor swap."

On Reddit, this user, Inside-Sandwich-5948, says his 2024 Toyota Tundra i-Force Max Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid engine failed.

He says, "I Bought a 2024 i-Force Max Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid last year. My truck just hit 7,700 miles when the engine shut down and went into limp mode for a few hundred yards. Alerts popped up saying "hybrid system malfunction" "Check engine," and "Advanced Ultrasonic Detecting and Ranging System."

"I had it towed back three hours to my hometown (it was in the middle of nowhere at the time of the breakdown). The Toyota service department called the next day and said they were waiting on parts and would have to take apart the entire engine.  Once they get the engine, so they said expect 1-2 months before I get it back."

Another Reddit user, Prestigious-Gap-5242, responds,

"I literally just got the same error messages as you. I also bought mine in March, so I guess I can lemon law this truck. I'm in California, 16,000 miles on it, just got a full tank of gas, drove it home, woke up, going to get food, drove it out the driveway, and then weird noises, Christmas lights on my dash."

Final Thoughts and Questions for Toyota Tundra Hybrid Owners

Toyota must replace over 100,000 - 2022 and 2023 Tundra pickup and Lexus LX SUV engines with the V35A twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 power plant. Read my full report here for more information.

With all the reports of 2024 and now 2025 Tundra owners experiencing engine failure, It appears that Toyota has not fixed the engine issues and reliability problems with the 2024-2025 Tundra trucks.

It is important to note that while there are reports of 2024 and now 2025 Tundra owners experiencing engine failure, many owners report no problems with their Tundra Hybrid trucks.

What Should Toyota Tundra Owners Do?

If a Toyota Tundra Hybrid owner experiences engine failure, they should immediately contact their dealership and Toyota corporate to explore options for repair or replacement, potentially including a recall or buyback.

Consider Legal Options:

If the situation is not resolved satisfactorily, you may want to consider consulting with a lawyer or The Lemon Law Experts to explore legal options.

I bought my first new Toyota Truck, a 2023 Tundra Hybrid Capstone. It is a very beautiful truck. I did buy the service package with my new truck, but soon realized that Toyota only suggest oil changes every 15,000km. I have just retired after being a Honda tech for the same company and position for 2 months short of 50 years. It didn’t take long to realize that the majority of the engine rebuilds or failures that I came across was DIRECTLY related to dirty oil and severe engine wear, from dirty oil. Granted, new oils have the characteristics and in additives in the oils to be able to have a lubrication range to 15,000 kms. But the oil becomes dirty from air borne contaminants or from direct engine combustion and once the oil is dirty or contaminated, it’s lubrication abilities are no longer sufficient, hence, engine failure from “lack of quality lubrication”. The 5 cars or trucks in our home fleet, are almost sidelined at 5000 kms to have their oils and filter changes. My last new truck, 2004 Nissian Titan, was involved in crash, write off at 378,000 kms, with perfect running engine. No oil consumption. Change your oil!

I bought a 2024 iforce max limited in April 2024. 5600 miles and the only problem so far is a cracked driver seat base which they’re fixing next week. (Fingers crossed).
