Paparazzi evading 2013 Mercedes GL 63 AMG breaks cover

The all-new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG luxury SUV has broken cover and has just made its global debut in Moscow. While we reported complete details here earlier in May, Mercedes has released a few more details on the high-performance off-roader. Not that anyone who buys this luxury all-wheel-drive vehicle will ever take it off the pavement, but it is certainly capable. And it's even more capable for some fast escapes.

The new GL 63 AMG is “unique in the segment” says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The luxury SUV combines the comfort of the S-Class with the high-performance of an AMG sports sedan. The luxury ultra-performance SUV is the fastest grocery hauler on the planet. If you need to get somewhere fast, this is the vehicle to get you there quickly.

This beauty comes with the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine. One look at the specs and you know you’ll be in for one quick ride. The V8 pumps out 557 horsepower and 560 lb. ft. of stump pulling torque. Mercedes says the GL 63 AMG will sprint from 0-62 in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 155 (electronically limited).

The AMG M 157 eight-cylinder engine features an innovative, high-tech power package including spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, biturbo charging, air/water intercooling, all-aluminum crankcase, a four-valve-per-cylinder design with variable camshaft adjustment, plus alternator management and the ECO start/stop system.

Power is transmitted to all four wheels by the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission. The seven-speed automatic has a double-declutching function for downshifting. The GL 63 AMG employs the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60.

And if that isn’t enough, the AMG Ride Control sports suspension with Airmatic package, features air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS). This is all combined with the Active Curve System which increases handling at high speeds. It sounds like the GL 63 AMG is the perfect vehicle for evading the paparazzi.

And to bring the big SUV to a safe stop after those high-speed chases, the GL 63 AMG high-performance braking system features large ventilated and perforated brake discs to prevent overheating or fading.

The ultra-fast 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG will be available in Europe in November 2012 with a purchase price of $163.936 U.S.
