The next-generation Subaru Forester needs two things to be one of the top picks for compact SUV shoppers. The 2023 Forester was the number-one-selling model in Subaru of America's all-wheel-drive lineup. Forester has dropped to third in total sales for the Camden, N.J. automaker.
What would bring back interest in the Forester SUV? A new report from Australia says the next-generation 2024 Subaru Forester could get a turbocharged engine upgrade. The latest information from CarsGuide says a turbocharged Forester appears to be coming for an Australian launch next year.
The report says Subaru Australia managing director Blair Read did not confirm the Forester turbocharged model, but he didn't deny it when asked about the new model.
"Next year marks 50 years of Subaru in Australia as an official importer. We have some exciting plans around special editions that will appeal to the Australian public," said Read.
CarsGuide says, "Once deemed unlikely for Australia, a turbocharged Forester variant seems to now be firming for our market and could even appear next year. The only question is, which one?"
There could be two options for the next-generation Forester. Subaru has the FA18 1.8-liter turbocharged Boxer engine they use in the second-generation Levorg hatchback. Subaru could sell it in Australia and Europe, but the powerplant is too small for the U.S.-spec Forester.
The FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged direct-injection Boxer engine from the 2023 Outback XT and Wilderness trim levels would be a better option to power the Forester. What would make sense is Subaru of America offering a next-generation 2024 Forester Wilderness with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine upgrade.
Will Subaru offer a Forester hybrid?
Subaru offers a Forester hybrid, but not in North America. In Subaru's new corporate report released in November, the Japanese automaker said by 2030, at least 40 percent of its global sales will be battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) or Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs). We expect a U.S.-spec Forester hybrid will be one of Subaru of America's next models to get hybrid technology.
Will Subaru offer a Forester EV?
A next-generation Forester hybrid will likely come first, and a Forester battery-electric model will follow. Subaru Corporation announced earlier this year they will begin making electric vehicles in mixed production with internal combustion vehicles at its Yajima plant in Japan by 2025.
Subaru will start offering hybridized powertrains sourced from Toyota by 2025 and will build battery-electric cars itself in a new factory in Japan in the latter half of the decade.
Subaru has yet to confirm a next-generation turbocharged Forester trim level as they remain tight-lipped about its future model changes. New Forester hybrid and all-electric models are likely coming in the next seven years. Stay tuned.

Absolutely I would buy a Subaru Forester with a turbo engine! Every review I've read about the Forester driving experience points out pros & cons. The biggest "con" without exception is the current engine lacks sufficient power. Look at all the Forester's competition and you will see they all have more horsepower. The turbo is way over due for America! Wake up Subaru! America wants the turbo in a Forester!!!

My 2004 XT 2.5L is faster, has better visibility and is more reliable than the 2017 XT 2.0 that I recently sold. Try backing up a hill with that CVT.

I’m on my second forester. I love it. Both have been turbo engines. If you have ever driven both, and I have, they are two different cars. I’ve always resented Subaru for trying to get me to buy the outback by giving it the turbo first. I hate the outback. My current Subaru is getting long in the tooth, and this year I have to buy a new car (getting a car payment again…sigh). If there is no turbo later this year, sorry, but the next car will be a Toyota.

Subaru needs an engine that gives both more power and better mileage, with mileage beinig the most critcal. So, please bring the 1.8 turbo and/or hybrid, same engine for the wilderness which is what I would like to purchase, I also hope they can broaden the gearing so the wilderness does not provide worse mileage than the others. I have a 2011 outback and am anxious to see what they come with,

Yes! for such a large beloved compact SUV, a turbo charge engine adding at minimum; 190- 200+ hp is an exciting, outstanding upgrade for the Forester.
"I would definitely Buy that!"

I love my 2023 Forester Wilderness. The only issues are that it's under-powered and gas mileage is horrific for a 4 banger. My last Accord had 250hp and still returned 33mpg. Update the engine and I'll take a serious look.

I have a 2005 Forester that I LOVE. It is a turbo and I won’t go down in horsepower to buy a new forester. So many other car makers are now offering turbo engines that I don’t get why
Subaru stopped. I am considering another brand because of the lack of power offered. Please bring back the turbo!!

It's a shame that the 2.4 liter turbocharged engine is not offered in U.S. spec Foresters. I suppose Subaru doesn't want to decimate Outback sales as they are having enough problems with engineering and build quality out of Indiana...and with the 2.5 liter engine Crosstrek models coming from the same place adding insult to injury...oh well...leave it to us sanctimonious Yanks to screw it all up... again...
