Report Says Subaru Legacy Is On The Chopping Block, It's Not Because Of Slow Sales

If you want a 2024 Subaru Legacy sedan, it's still available and a good pick for sedan shoppers. But the Legacy sedan may not be around much longer if a new report is accurate. Automotive News (by subscription) says Subaru of Indiana Automotive, where the Legacy is manufactured, will "rebalance its North American production capacity" so the automaker can build more EVs in the U.S. factory.

That would mean the Legacy could be dropped from the lineup, not because of slow sales, but to make room for new up-and-coming all-electric models on its U.S. assembly lines.

The Automotive News report says, "Subaru's future product plan will require it to rebalance its North American production capacity and rely on corporate partner Toyota as it begins to widen its U.S. product offerings to include more battery-electric vehicles while continuing to invest in its combustion-powered models."

"To meet its growing demand, Subaru is expected to move production of the slow-selling Legacy sedan from its sole U.S. plant, in Lafayette, Ind., back to Japan, as it did earlier with the Impreza. But it might also discontinue the model."

Subaru Corporation has already moved production of the 2024 Impreza from Subaru of Indiana Automotive to Japan. Next, they are expanding the Gunma plant in Japan to include new electric models, and they need as much production capacity for new electric SUVs. The Legacy may have to go. 

Subaru of Indiana Automotive made room for the top-selling Subaru Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and the all-new Crosstrek Wilderness to be built in America.

AN says freeing up more space in the U.S. plant would help new electric vehicles built here to qualify for the entire U.S. EV tax credit. However, Automotive News has been unable to confirm Subaru's plans independently.

The Subaru Legacy is an endangered species in many cities across North America. Subaru decided to drop the Legacy (Liberty) midsize sedan in Australia in 2020 because of slow sales. Will the North American market be next?

Subaru recently dropped the Impreza sedan for the 2024 model year. Subaru went with the hatchback body style because of its added utility and cargo-carrying ability for those with active lifestyles.

If you want a 2024 Subaru Legacy, it's still available for U.S. customers. Subaru has yet to confirm it, but the automaker could stop building the sedan to make room for new electric models coming by 2027.

What is the price of the 2024 Subaru Legacy?

For the 2024 model year, the Legacy sedan is still available in five trim levels. The base is priced at $25,985, Premium ($28,285), Sport ($35,585), Limited ($33,035), and Touring XT ($39,285). Destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,090).

Will Subaru drop the Legacy like they did the WRX STI and Impreza sedan and move to an All-SUV electric vehicle lineup? With electric vehicles ramping up, don't be surprised to see Subaru drop the sedan sometime soon. Significant changes are coming. Stay tuned.
