The Subaru Baja Wilderness You Want That Won’t Make Its Global Debut This Year

Subaru of New England has the right idea, but too bad U.S. customers won't see the global debut of the Baja Wilderness pickup anytime soon. So instead, see why this model would hit the sweet spot.

Subaru of America needs one new model to fill out its all-wheel-drive line; the Baja Wilderness pickup. Subaru of New England has the right idea. They recently put the image of the Baja Wilderness on its Instagram page, saying, "You asked, we delivered." Of course, it was just an April fool's joke, but the truth is often spoken in jest.

If only it were true. Subaru of New England said, "Introducing the all-new 2024 Baja Wilderness. Equipped with a 260 horsepower turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine, 9.2" of ground clearance, standard all-wheel drive, and up to 75 cubic feet of cargo space, the Subaru Baja Wilderness has everything you need for off-road adventures. So where will the 2024 Baja Wilderness take you?"

We know it would take customers further off the grid to play in the dirt this summer. But, it would also raise Subaru of America to new heights in sales and give the Camden, N.J. automaker the missing vehicle in its all-wheel-drive lineup.

The Subaru Baja pickup would be the hot new model to significantly impact U.S. customers this year. The image below from Battle Wagon Gang represents a desirable 2024 Subaru Baja Wilderness trim level. It's what outdoor enthusiasts want and what Subaru of America needs.

Of course, the all-new 2024 Subaru Baja pickup would feature the brand's core values of safety, fun-to-drive, all-wheel-drive, fuel-efficient, a low center of gravity, and dual-function X-Mode for all-terrain capability. In addition, the new Baja pickup would be extra rugged and ready to go further off the grid.

We can imagine an all-new 2024 Baja Wilderness with a 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine producing 260 horsepower. The more rugged Baja trim could lead the segment with extra ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and underbody protection for off-roaders. Subaru wouldn't be able to build them fast enough.

Subaru's new dual-function X-Mode system would be a perfect fit and a big hit with customers with active lifestyles who want to go further off-road. In addition, because the Subaru Global Platform provides model flexibility between the Subaru of Indiana Automotive's assembly lines and the Subaru plant in Japan, the pickup truck could be built in the U.S. plant.

It could be manufactured alongside the all-new outdoor-themed Crosstrek Wilderness in Lafayette, Indiana. It would be priced around $35,000 and compete with the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road pickup.

What would happen if Subaru of America asked Subaru Corporation to return the Baja pickup to its lineup and build a new compact version for its U.S. customers? First, Subaru Corporation might surprise SOA and resurrect the Subaru Baja nameplate. They could also give it Wilderness upgrades for outdoor and off-road enthusiasts. Or they could wait a bit longer and give U.S. customers a new electric Baja pickup.

Subaru of New England has the right idea, and they have a lot of clout with SOA, as they are the most prominent U.S. Subaru distributor. It's time for Subaru of America to step up and launch an all-new 2025 Subaru Baja Wilderness Edition pickup for its U.S. customers and dive into the compact pickup market. Exactly! I bought my 2006 Baja specifically for hunting. They should sell them at Bass Pro Shops. The vehicle is excellent off road and due to it’s smaller size an tight turn radius, gets me to places “real 4wds” can’t go while getting twice the mpg. I can put muddy/dirty gear in the bed with game and wash everything out with a hose and still park in a compact vehicle space. I love my 06 (with 240,000 on the original drivetrain) and hope she lasts until Subaru pull its head out of it’s arse and brings back the Baja!

Yes I would. buy a baja. Not interested in an electric version. I think they are so cute and practical for a female with Dogs. I could put my cargo in the back. And the Dogs in the back seat.

I'm going to be looking for a compact pick up truck next year. Guess, I'll have to jump off the Subaru wagon...

Teri (not verified)    April 20, 2023 - 7:21AM

I would buy one, no hands down. Been wanting a Baja since I was in my 20s. Love to camp, kayak, and bike. Can't wait for it

As the owner of a 2003 Subaru Baja after I had an accident with it that totaled it I managed to find another one EXACTLY like it! Between my first one and this one, over 375,000! If anything happens to the second, SOA PLEASE make me a new one!

Subaru has screwed around for so long about bringing back the Baja that they have lost me and my wife’s business.
TOO BAD!

Wow.... been a fan of Baja's since right after the last year they made them, and I consider it a real loss to my Subaru options as I need a single work/play vehicle with toughness, efficiency, and capability. This is absolutely a vehicle for me. After owning 3 subaru's I would buy this in a heartbeat and would be willing to pay handsomely for it. It's a gaping hole in Subaru's brand now, especially when people are being drawn to the other super practical compact pickups. They are selling a TON of Hyundais and Mavericks. Where are you Subaru? Just imagine how a sleeker modern single row / 5' box Brat would sell too .......... Peg the new Brat at 30k and the Baja at 40 , one on the Impreza/CrossTrek frame and one on the Outback frame. Sell a gazillion of them. You're welcome.

Kind of disappointed that it is still not coming soon. The wilderness trim would be awesome and I hope it is as flexible as my current 2006 but they need to hurry with the release. My 2006 unfortunately is starting the infamous rust in the rear wheel well right where it will affect the unibody structural integrity soon. Got any other pictures of the features and interior yet?

The baja is awesome. But I've been waiting and wishing the new baja truck would be released. I'm ready to buy. I refuse to buy any other makers trucks. So please it's a long time coming

Yes ..I want one and not an old 2006 that has frame rot and a ton of miles...they need to bring this back asap...a lil car...truck and SUV all in one and a hybrid would be nice too..if it was like a Prius and had battery and gas ..no need to charge it

I had a 2003 Baja for 12 yrs. Never have I loved a car so much. I would buy a new one in a heartbeat.
Please Subaru of America, get a clue and add the Baja to your line up again. I've also had 4 Crosstreks that are mighty awesome.

Im ready for any new Baja, gas, electric, or hybrid which is my preference. How about a solar panel on the roof ? Time is ticking.

Amy (not verified)    July 21, 2023 - 4:20PM

Oh please!! I need this car! I bought my baja brand new in 2006. 235xxx miles. I love it so much!! She is tired! Of course, I am keeping her. But she needs a sister. Hope it comes out soon!

I bought my first Subaru in the summer of 2001 it was the 2002 wrx . Now I have a 2014 cross trek, I love it but if Subaru makes a pick up I’ll trade my cross trek in tomorrow! Please make a pick up!

I have 2003 Baja. Bought a new 2023 Outback XT for my wife to replace a 2008 Tribeca. I’d upgrade my Baja to a new Baja when (and if) it wears out before I do. Until then, it deserves the same respect and loyalty that it has shown me.

I have been waiting for the Subaru Baja for years, the tease it will be coming out is not nice to us who are Subaru lovers. I only buy Subaru because it's the best AWD vehicle around, HP, mph and they just look so good. Please bring the Baja back. It will sell like crazy. So many people want a pick up but want AWD which Subaru offers. I was in the auto industry for 20 years and everyone loved Subaru and never had any major problems with them. They are affordable, maintenance is easy, and the vehicle looks sexy, and mean... Please bring it to the USA so we all can enjoy it again.

Reluctantly bought a Forester 2 months ago, BUT I WANT A BAJA!!!!!! NOT an electric vehicle, gasoline!!!

Mel (not verified)    September 7, 2023 - 11:11AM

I can't wait for the new baha to come out I will be getting me one. Don't like the other ones like the Maverick or the Santa Cruz. So please hurry up and bring them out.

Baja to Maverick (not verified)    October 5, 2023 - 10:48AM

As a former owner of a 2005 Baja, which I only sold last year with 214,000 miles, I would buy a new one right now if it was a regenerating hybrid AWD as I have gotten used to the high gas mileage of my new Ford Maverick hybrid with gas prices being over $6 per gallon. Yes, my Maverick is not AWD, but it gets 45 miles per gallon.

Dennis (not verified)    October 9, 2023 - 8:17PM

It's crazy that SOA hasn't figured out just how mad popular a Subaru Baja pick up would be in America. Just tell me where?

Diane (not verified)    October 24, 2023 - 1:58AM

Man, I’m taking my 2006 Baja Sport in for service tomorrow and was wondering if I could add a new one anytime soon. Thrilling let-down. Oh well.
