Subaru’s Inventory Continues To Shrink, Now Stands At Only 3 Days

Inventory of the 2022 Subaru Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek models continues to shrink. Here is what it means for new car shoppers this spring.

The 2022 Subaru Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek are in high demand, and inventory levels of the popular all-wheel-drive SUVs continue to shrink. According to the Automotive News Research and Data Center, Subaru of America's day's supply of all its new vehicles stands at three days as of March 1. As of February 1, 2022, Subaru had a four-day supply.

The day's supply refers to the number of days needed to sell all vehicles in inventory, based on the previous month's daily selling rate. The inventory level is the unit count of vehicles at Subaru of America retailers, factory lots, ports of entry, and in transit from Subaru's factory in Gunma, Japan, and Lafayette, Indiana.

What does it mean for customers?

Patrick Wergin, chairman of the Subaru National Retailers Advisory Board, told Automotive News that customers "have been resilient" in waiting for the new vehicles they have ordered from retailers.

The Subaru plant in Gunma, Japan, where they manufacture the 2022 Forester, and 2022 Crosstrek, remains shutdown today, March 21. You can read the complete report here.

With production constraints caused by supply chain issues and plant shutdowns, Wergin says maintaining any flow of new Subaru vehicles to retailers has been difficult. He says the vast majority of each truckload is arriving already pre-sold. He says at points, his inventory had fallen to just one new vehicle of any model.

On March 7, Subaru of America has to shut off all new orders for the refreshed 2022 Forester compact SUV because the popular model is effectively sold out. Subaru of America CEO Tom Doll says retailers may have to return to customers who have unfulfilled 2022 model orders and persuade them to move into 2023 models because the 2022 model year is effectively sold out.

Subaru of America recently also shut off all orders for the 2022 Impreza compact sedan and hatchback, 2022 BRZ sports coupe, and the all-new 2023 Subaru Solterra all-electric SUV.

Customers ordering a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek will wait approximately four to six months for their new subcompact SUV. 2022 Subaru Outback models manufactured and shipped from Lafayette, Indiana, are waiting two-to-three months, according to our source close to Subaru.

At the NADA Show, Automotive News says Subaru retailers are not seeing signs of waning demand for their vehicles, including the hot new 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness and 2022 Outback Wilderness trim levels.

What's next for Subaru customers? Inventory will remain tight and customers ordering new 2022 Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, and other new models can get a new all-wheel-drive vehicle, but they will need to be patient and wait.

So disappointed we aren't getting another WRX STI. I was waiting to buy one of the new ones. Not interested in a CVT.

Ordered an Outback on Dec 3 2021, still waiting for it. All the dealership can tell me is that delivery is in April. Well that’s half gone now.
