We knew Subaru and Subaru Tecnica International (STI) would be bringing out more STI-enhanced vehicles. It looks like a new Subaru BRZ STI is coming sooner than later. Subaru of America teased the new BRZ STI on their Facebook page earlier today and says more information on the performance BRZ is coming June 8.
We knew it was coming because at the Tokyo Motor Show 2015, Subaru Tecnica International President, Yoshio Hirakawa said the number of stand alone Subaru STI models could triple in the future and that four models could be coming soon. One will be the BRZ STI.
Hirakawa “controversially” confirmed at the Tokyo show that STI engineers were already working on potential advanced technology that could make a BRZ STI a reality. Now it looks like it’s finally here. A BRZ STI model was seen in Michigan recently, and the wing on the back was the give-away.
Many fans will be disappointed, because there likely won’t be a turbocharged model when information arrives in a week. Hirakawa says until now, Subaru has ruled out a turbocharged version of the BRZ sports coupe because of turbo, intercooler and crash test incompatibilities.
At the New York International Auto Show 2015, Michael McHale, Director of Corporate Communications at Subaru of America said a BRZ STI would be coming in two years. Subaru and McHale did not said what the exact engine or chassis specs the new BRZ STI will get. The branding of the U.S. STI models has also not been decided yet. But it may be billed as a BRZ "tuned by STI," McHale said.
A new 2018 Subaru BRZ STI is being announced on June 8, 2017. It could be coming later this year or early 2018. Stay tuned.
