How do Subaru's top-selling models rank with the best-selling new cars in 2023? Through the first quarter of 2023, the 2023 Subaru Outback and 2023 Subaru Crosstrek are among the top picks by new model shoppers.
But the two models barely made the cut of the top 25 best-selling new cars. A report from Car and Driver says the Outback is #21, and the Crosstrek subcompact SUV is #23.

The Outback still defies the odds.
The Outback is now Subaru's number-one-selling model in Subaru of America's lineup, and it's an anomaly because it's the only wagon in America that's ranked with the heavy hitters. Outback is only one of the few wagons left in the U.S. market because of slow sales.

There are several reasons why the Outback is the top Subaru model. Outback sales are impressive.
Even though the 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV was the second-place performer in the lineup in September, it increased an impressive 71.2 percent with 14,545 models sold compared with 8,497 in September 2022. Outback is now up 16.6 percent in the first quarter of 2023. Outback leads all other models this year, with 122,881 midsize SUVs delivered to customers in 2023.
What sets the Outback farther apart?
The 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV rides higher with extra ground clearance (8.7 inches) than most family haulers. The all-new rugged Wilderness trim gave the Outback a significant boost in sales. The Outdoor-themed trim level comes with 9.4 inches of deep sand, mud, or snow-clearing clearance, and it also comes standard with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive.
The Onyx Edition and Wilderness also have a new dual-function X-Mode for added off-pavement capabilities. The new system has settings for Snow and Dirt mode to the new Deep Snow/Deep Mud Mode and is best for sand where traction is compromised.
For shoppers looking for a new 2024 Outback, here is the pricing.
For the 2024 model year, the Outback will be available in nine trim levels. The Base is priced at $30,190, Premium ($32,490), Onyx Edition ($37,400), Limited ($37,090), Touring ($41,640), Onyx Edition XT ($40,655), Wilderness ($41,255), Limited XT ($41,490), and Touring XT ($44,090). In addition, destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,295).
The Subaru Crosstrek is the best-selling small SUV in America.
The Subaru Crosstrek is the only subcompact SUV to make the top twenty-five best-selling models list. The new 2024 Crosstrek arrives, and the subcompact SUV is Subaru of America's second-best-selling model in its all-wheel-drive lineup.
What sets the Crosstrek apart from all other small SUVs?
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek rides higher with more ground clearance (8.7-inches) than the competition. The all-new rugged Wilderness arrives now has 9.3 inches of ground clearance and extra off-road upgrades and will give the model a significant boost in sales in the last three months of 2023.
The Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trims have a new dual-function X-Mode for added off-pavement capabilities. The new system has settings for Snow and Dirt mode to the new Deep Snow/Deep Mud Mode and is best for sand where traction is compromised.
For shoppers looking for a new 2024 Crosstrek, here is the pricing.
For 2024, the Crosstrek is available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels and has a starting price of $26,290 (the same MSRP as the 2023 Base model equipped with the Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission).
The 2024 Crosstrek Premium has a starting price of $27,440, Sport ($30,290), and Limited ($32,190). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225).
What is the price of the Crosstrek Wilderness?
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness will be the most expensive Crosstrek trim level. The all-new Crosstrek Wilderness costs $33,290, including dealer destination and delivery fees ($1,295).
Where is the Subaru Forester?
The Forester has 106,345 models delivered to customers in the first nine months of 2023. The Forester misses the top-twenty cut by 5,104 models. The Forester needs a remodel and won't receive new upgrades for another year.
Forester trails the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Hyundai Tucson in the compact SUV category. Forester won't be back among the heavy hitters until 2025.
Before the 2024 models arrive, the 2023 Subaru Outback is among the twenty-five best-selling new cars in the first three quarters of 2023 and the best-selling wagon in America. The Crosstrek is the best-selling subcompact SUV in America.
