The 2024 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, Forester, Ascent, and Solterra SUVs are a cut above in severe winter driving. I have covered the X-Mode feature in other Subaru SUV stories, and it's the best for getting out of a sticky situation when the snow gets deep.
For those new to Subaru, you may have questions about the X-Mode button and when to use it. It's one of the best safety features for winter driving, and you will utilize it more after reading this. Here is a brief explanation and guide on how the X-Mode system works and how to get the most from it in everyday use.
What is Subaru X-Mode, and when should you use it?
X-Mode is not just for off-road use. With the X-Mode system activated, the vehicle can better capitalize on the available traction and provide sure-footed-ness over and above Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.
Use Subaru X-Mode in severe wintery conditions.
Remember the Subaru X-Mode, especially when traveling to your winter sports activities. The system controls the engine, transmission, all-wheel-drive torque split, and braking system when road conditions are challenging, like on a mountain pass, and there is a need to capitalize on the grip.
It uses the CVT transmission to better direct power to the wheels that need the most traction. This is also useful in everyday driving where there is snow, ice, mud, or wet conditions on the road.
X-Mode can be used to negotiate a steep driveway.
Another helpful way to use X-Mode is when backing out of a steep, icy, or snow-covered driveway. Because of the split all-wheel drive torque, the uphill wheel will slip without X-Mode being engaged. As soon as you engage the system, it will direct power to the wheels that need the most traction, and you can easily back the Subaru Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Ascent, or Solterra out of the slippery spot.
What if you are traveling downhill?
X-Mode also increases hill driving capability. Subaru's Hill Descent Control maintains a constant speed when traveling down steep declines. This can be useful when you are on a steep, icy road or coming to a stop sign.
The system reads the road conditions for you and automatically applies the needed traction to each wheel independently. This allows the driver to focus exclusively on steering, keeping their foot off the brake, and negotiating curves on the road.
How do I engage X-Mode on the new 2024 models?
Consider this if you want to use the Subaru X-Mode on the new 2024 Outback, Crosstrek, Forester, Ascent, or Solterra.

To turn on X-Mode, find and press the switch marked X-Mode on the center console of your Subaru or press the X-Mode icon on your infotainment screen.
What is dual-function X-Mode?
If your vehicle has dual-function X-Mode, you can choose between the Snow/Dirt or Deep Snow/Mud function or select your desired setting using the touchscreen.
Once activated, you should see an indicator light on the dashboard, signaling that X-Mode is on. Your screen will display the statuses of all components affected by X-Mode.

Note: Subaru says X-Mode is designed to be used at low speeds. You can turn on the X-Mode feature at 25 mph or slower, but the system will not function above 18 mph. The Hill Descent Control feature is only operational at speeds up to 12 mph.
Many Subaru owners won't take their vehicle off-road or use it for extreme off-pavement adventures. X-Mode will help you in everyday driving to capitalize on the traction available and provide sure-footed-ness over and above what is afforded by Subaru's Symmetrical full-time all-wheel-drive.
