Elon Musk Confirms With Version 12 Tesla Plans to Move FSD Software Out of Beta

Tesla is making great strides in the full self-driving front. The EV maker first released the current iteration of the company’s FSD software back in 2020. In the past 3 years, Tesla has been working on FSD Beta and has released several iterations that improved the capabilities of the software. Currently, Tesla is on FSD Beta v11.4. FSD Beta v11 is the first full-stack iteration of the software where the entire driving process uses all eight cameras and neural nets to make decisions.

Previous to version 11, Tesla used manually written codes and only a single camera when driving on the highway. Although V11 was a major upgrade, Elon Musk has recently revealed that some driving decisions on the version 11 software still rely on manually written codes as opposed to AI. Related News: Up Close And Personal With the Tesla Cybertruck - Things You Didn't Know Despite this fact, FSD Beta v11 is nonetheless very good and has given us the first sign that Tesla might actually pull off level 5 autonomy in the not-too-distant future. Currently, it has become commonplace to witness zero intervention FSD Beta v11 drives in complex driving situations. This has been certainly exhilarating, however, to add to the excitement, today, Elon Musk has revealed that FSD Beta will no longer be in “Beta” after the release of v12. Tesla added “beta” to the FSD software’s name to emphasize the fact that the software is still in a testing phase and that owners should not trust it. However, if Tesla indeed removes the “Beta” moniker from the FSD software then it would mean that the company believes the software is good enough for people to at least partially trust it. This would not necessarily mean that after FSD Beta v12, people will no longer need to monitor the software driving and will be able to, for example, sleep in their car while they get chaffered by the FSD software or do their work during their commute. This will require true level 5 autonomy. And Musk has previously stated that in order to reach level 5 autonomy, Tesla needs to show that the FSD software is an order of magnitude safer than a human driver or in other words 10 times less likely to get into an accident than an average human driver. Having said that, even though FSD v12 might not be a level 5 autonomous software it is still nonetheless exciting to see FSD v12 become the first iteration of FSD software that Tesla doesn’t consider to be a beta program.
