Patrick Davina is a brand new Tesla Model Y owner; however, he says his excitement was short-lived after he accidentally damaged his all-electric crossover simply trying to open the trunk.
David states that he parked his new Model Y in the garage and accidentally pressed the on-screen button labeled "open trunk."
However, because of the size of his garage, Patrick ended up crashing the Model Y trunk into the garage door.
Disappointed by the scratch and wanting to prevent this from happening again, Patrick shared his story in the Tesla Tips & Tricks Facebook group.
He writes…
“My one-week-old Tesla Model Y was parked in my garage, and I accidentally touched the screen where it said open trunk.”
This doesn’t seem like it would be a problem; however, Patrick says his Model Y’s trunk opened onto his garage door and ended up scratching the paint off his brand new vehicle.
Patrick continues to write…
“It opened and hit the garage door and scratched it. Any ideas on how to fix a one-inch scratch?”
Finally, Patrick concludes his post by sharing how disappointed he is to have already put a blemish on his brand-new Model Y.
He adds…
“I’m so sad!”
Below his post, Patrick included a picture of his brand-new Tesla Model Y that he took as he was picking it up from the Tesla delivery center.
This is certainly not an ideal situation, and the first scratch on a brand-new vehicle hurts a lot.
Although disappointing, looking at the comments, several other Tesla owners shared that they, too, have scratched their vehicle while opening the trunk inside the garage.
A fellow Tesla owner, Christine Arnold, writes…
“I’ve also scratched my Tesla paint trying to open the trunk. I have adjusted the height limit and added the good old noodle for protection. Just used a touch-up paint to fix the scratch. It’s only a car.”
Other Tesla owners also gave Patrick a useful tip, saying he should lower the maximum height the trunk opens on the touchscreen.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, John Sindelar, writes…
“Put a rear spoiler on your Tesla Model Y and then adjust the height limit of the trunk.”
This should allow him to open his trunk without worrying about hitting the garage door again. However, other Tesla owners who have adjusted the trunk opening height say there are some pitfalls.
If Patrick lowers the maximum height his trunk opens to avoid hitting it in the garage, then it will be lowered everywhere, and he could hit his head.
A fellow Tesla owner, Carsten B Andersen, says he has lowered the maximum opening height for his trunk, and now he bumps his head on the trunk corner, forgetting it now opens lower.
He writes…
“If you lower the maximum height, then you’ll nail your head on the corner of the open trunk lid as you forget it opens less now.”
Another Tesla owner, Matt Beiers, agrees with this sentiment, writing...
“Yep, I do that every time, my wife can walk under the boot latch, I nail my head every time.
Overall, it’s disappointing that Patrick has scratched his brand-new Model Y while trying to open the trunk. However, other Tesla owners can ensure they adjust the maximum height of their trunk opening to avoid the same fate.

Tesla needs to add location for opening trunk. ...so in your garage it is set to a certain height, but in other places it opens to max height.

If this is a consistent problem, Tesla should add an option to have a confirmation pop up.

I did the exact same thing, but after looking close at the scratch, I noticed that it was paint from the garage door and not really a scratch at all. I was able to gently wash it off with a little pressure and finger nail persuasion! I hope the same for you.

He feels sad about the scratch. Wait till it bursts into flames. Good thing he didn't buy one of those ugly, dumpster look alike, Cybertrucks; the side panels could have fallen off

I'm sorry for that scratches on your new car. Perhaps Tesla could add another sensor that would.prevent that to occur. However with cost cuts and current sales numbers it is unlikely that Tesla will take care of this situation.
