Tesla has fitted the Cybertruck with the biggest windshield wiper in the automotive world. However, despite its massive size, the single-blade “Giga Wiper” has been less than ideal when tested in the real world.
A Tesla Cybertruck owner from California recently took his truck on a skiing trip to Lake Tahoe. However, the return trip was full of challenges, as the truck's massive windshield wiper blew up into pieces in the middle of a snowstorm.
The owner, who goes by the username Nico007 on the Cybertruck Owners Club, shared all the cold-weather-related issues he encountered during his recent getaway.
Without a functioning giga wiper, snow started to build up on his windshield, forcing him to drive with barely any visibility up front.
Nico007 turned the heat to the maximum to stop the snow build-up; however, making matters worse, the Cybertruck’s passenger side windows would not close properly.
This means the HVAC system could not be used effectively since the heat was escaping out the open window.
The frustrated Cybertruck owner shared his situation under the title “Wiper blew up in pieces while driving in a snow storm.”
Here is what he wrote…
“We were in Tahoe today, and there was a moderate snowstorm. We left the ski station after having removed most of the snow from the car. After 5 minutes of driving with the wiper on, it just blew up into pieces that flew off (we were driving at 20MPH) and fell on the road.
We got the pieces back, but it was impossible to reassemble them. We finished driving with the heat set to max, and thankfully I put some RainX on the windscreen so the snow was melting and falling off easily. I also used what was left of the wiper metal, which gave me very small visibility (see picture)
I feel the wiper (as usual with Tesla) is the weakest part of the car.
Besides that, we also had an issue with the passenger window making a strange noise once the window was up, so we had to keep it a little open.”
Below his post, Nico007 shared a picture of his Cybertruck’s snow-covered windshield as he continued driving after the wiper shattered into pieces.
There is barely any visibility out of the windshield; even the vehicle directly in front of the Cybertruck was not visible. For me, it looks like a white pickup truck, but let me know if you can tell what the vehicle in front is.
Given the limited visibility, Nico007 was lucky to make it back from his trip without any accidents. Even so, it might have been wiser to stop and have the vehicle towed rather than carry on under these conditions.
If you had to deal with a windshield wiper that blows up in the middle of a snowstorm and windows that don’t close during the cold, you might sour a bit on the vehicle.
However, Nico007 says he’s still pleased with his Cybertruck and particularly praises the truck’s handling in the snow.
Nico007 continues to write…
“Otherwise, the truck did awesome in the snow. I set it to off-road snow mode, and the regen and traction were really well managed, to the point of being really impressive.
I was driving with a friend who had a 4x4, and he was struggling to get in the driveway; the Cybertruck went in without even one spin.”
I guess it’s good that Nico007 still likes his Cybertruck; after all, he has paid $100,000 for it. Apparently, other Cybertruck owners trying to sell their trucks are finding it impossible to sell, with one owner saying, “I can’t give this thing away.”
Looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners were surprised the wiper blade could fail so spectacularly.
A Cybertruck owner from Southern California writes, “This is shocking, given the excellent build quality of our trucks. I'm glad you are okay.”
Although Nico007 has shared a picture of his Cybertruck’s windshield covered in snow while driving in the middle of the road, some Cybertruck owners shared their skepticism that the windshield wiper indeed failed.
A Tesla fan, Gus, from Austin, Texas, sarcastically writes…
“BREAKING NEWS: Cybertruck Wiper Explodes in Tahoe, Film at 11” Can we see pics of the shrapnel?”
In response, Nico007 provided a picture of the windshield wiper he picked up from the ground. What’s left is a blade snapped at multiple spots and wires dangling down.
The Cybertruck owner says the current state of the windshield wiper blade is despite his best efforts to reassemble it.
A windshield wiper that shatters into pieces in the middle of a snowstorm is definitely concerning. However, one Cybertruck owner says he’s prepared for this eventuality by keeping a spare blade inside his truck at all times.
The Cybertruck owner from New Jersey writes…
“When Tesla shop started carrying the wiper blade in stock, I ordered one to stow under the back seat in case of on-the-road failure. You can't just stop at a random O'Reilley's to get a blade for the Cybertruck yet. Sorry, that happened. It's the worst type of weather to lose a blade.”
Overall, seeing the Cybertruck’s windshield wiper fail so spectacularly in the middle of a snowstorm is concerning. However, please let me know what you think in the comments. That appears to be a major design failure. All vehicles should be equipped with two wiper blades, they always were. Driving in rain and snow require an absolutely reliable system for maintaining clear visibility ahead.
