Someone Is Dropping the Ball on the $7,500 U.S. Point of Sale EV Tax Credit. What Is Going On?

Multiple people are stating that they are not yet getting the point of sale EV tax credit this year. Who is dropping the ball here, and how long is it going to take?

2024 EV Tax Credit: Point of Sale Delayed

Recently, I shared the vehicles that qualified for the instant $7,500 EV tax credit in 2024. However, there is something wrong that I haven't seen much clarification on.

And that is, when is the point of sale portion of the credit going to take place? In theory, you should be able to go to Tesla's website, order a Model 3 Performance, as an example, and have a $7,500 reduction in the final price for the tax credit.

But, this is not happening at the moment, even though Tesla lists that the $7,500 tax credit is part of the savings you will get off the purchase price, it won't actually deduct it from the final purchase price.

What makes this even more puzzling is that nobody from the White House, U.S. government, Tesla, or any other EV company is offering clarification on this.

So, we are left to guess and theorize on when the point of sale tax credit will finally start to take place.

Confusion On When Point of Sale Will Happen

Sawyer Merritt, on X, had this to say about it:

I'm getting a lot of DMs asking questions about this, so I want to address it here:

As of right now, Tesla is still offering the same $7,500 Fed EV tax credit that they did last year. Tesla has NOT yet started offering the new $7,500 Fed point of sale rebate. I assume they will soon, but idk how soon.

He was immediately questioned by someone on X asking how he knows this, and he responded saying he knows of people taking delivery this week and Tesla isn't offering the point of sale tax credit yet.

Someone else went on to say that they are waiting to place their Model Y order as soon as this applies and they are still sitting there ready to pull the lever.

Tesla is also going to have to figure out the battery issue for the Model 3 RWD and Model 3 Long Range, which no longer qualify for the U.S. $7,500 tax credit at all. Other vehicles besides Tesla were also affected, like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the VW ID.4.

This is certainly a confusing item, and I'm not sure who dropped the ball here, but it would be nice to hear from the White House and Tesla (and others) what is going on here with some kind of official press release.

What do you think is happening with the $7,500 U.S. tax credit being instant and at point of sale? Why isn't it happening yet - is it just red tape?

I was told by a Tesla salesperson yesterday that the government was at fault for the delay in getting the point of sale rebate up and running — but it is up to dealers to register for the program and hard to know if Tesla has already done so or not. The salesperson didn’t know how long it would take to go into effect, and guessed it would be at least a few days. Another Tesla representative told me via chat there was no timeline for the POS rebate to go into effect.

This is very disappointing and frustrating. We were in "need" of a car and found a local dealer with a discounted Model Y Performance on the lot.

We got thru with the purchase, but haven't paid or picked it up. The dealer is really pushing us to pick it up this weekend.

I wanted to wait a few more days to see if anything changes. We were hoping to get the point of sale tax credit.

I have a Rivian R1S scheduled for delivery on 1/13./2024 I already had them push back the delivery date from 1/6/2024 in hopes that the POS rebate would be available before delivery. The Rivian guide tells me he is sure the POS rebate will not be available before 1/13 and that I should consult a tax expert for help on claiming the tax credit instead. It's been at least 3 months since the POS rebate for 2024 was announced. Amazed that the (Rivian and/or Federal) entities are not yet ready to provide the rebate.
