Honda’s updated response to consumer reported 2015 Honda CR-V vibration

Because Honda cares as much about our CR-V readers as we do...

With 134,660, 2015 Honda CR-Vs sold this year to date, despite a spattering of consumer reported 'at idle' vibration events, CR-V remains the best selling compact SUV in North America; and that’s no small feat with Ford, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota nipping at your proverbial heels.

Torque News has driven the competition in a side by side fair comparison under exacting field conditions. We, like the majority of auto journalist polled, vote 2015 Honda CR-V overall winner in the segment, based on construction quality, interior ergonomics, overall ride and handling characteristics, advanced styling and last but not least, fuel efficiency. We further acknowledge what we believe to be the best engine, CVT combination in the class.

With that said, what’s with the reported vibration issue…

As earlier reported by American Honda Motors and expanded on by Torque News and others, a small percentage of 2015 Honda CR-V buyers have experienced what they perceive as an unacceptable level of interior vibration when CR-V sits at idle engaged in “Drive-mode.” Honda has acknowledged the issue and as promised earlier in this video, to explore the cause and effect of the video, and, address an appropriate remedy.

This is where ‘things” get a bit tricky in a world where automotive engineering and a company's intent to serve the end user often collide; at times the individual customer’s perception comes into play.

In short

The cause and effect of a reported problem, short of an obviously defective component, is more often that not difficult to identify, much less replace within a “chapped” customer’s timeline. What one consumer views as a blaring nuisance, or defect may be an unknown or an acceptable condition to another; none the less, bothersome just the same to the unsatisfied new or used car owner.

What does Honda have to say about this and what does the future hold for 2015 CR-V owners?

Honda’s comment

When asked to comment on the issue at hand, Honda points to the use of an identical Earth Dreams ™ direct injected 4 cylinder i-VTEC engine and CVT transmission in the very popular 2015 Accord without incident of excessive vibration. This points to a (possible) “harmonics” vibration transmitted through the CR-V ACE structure or attached frame member.

Note: Although the pin-pointed source of vibration has not been divulged to Torque News, Honda assures us and CR-V owners that the acknowledged vibration presents no danger of present or future component failure, and, that the company is working diligently on an acceptable fix. On a personal note, Torque News did not experience unusual vibration when initially test driving 2015 CR-V. we will revisit CR-V this week.

According to Honda spokesperson Chris Martin, “we're working to come up with solutions that will address several different customer perceptions of the vibration at idle. While it
is annoying to some, it is not noticed by most, and it does not represent a
detriment to the safety or reliability of the vehicle," states Chris.

Base on past dealership experience and subsequent product recall time line: Our advice to Torque News readers that currently experience an ongoing (slight) vibration issue with Honda CR-V is to report it to your dealer and patiently wait for a notification of recall from American Honda Motors. CR-V is the best selling SUV in North America. And, Honda will do all that is necessary to preserve the overall quality reputation of CR-V while serving the customer.

I had the same problem and I got tired to take the car for balance. At the end a bought 4 new tires for my new CRV and now it is a new car, no vibration at all. Now I can drive 70+ and nothing. Honda didn't care that I had to purchase new tires for a new car, the sucks. I'm disappointment of Honda

I made the mistake of buying a honda odyssey in 1998 with the 2.3 L engine and junk transmission with the clogged up torque converter lockup. I had to change the transmission fluid every 3000 miles to get the check engine light to go out due to the fact that the RPM level did not drop when the computer told the torque converter to lock. The fuel mileage went from 28 to 23 when this happened. The dealer and Honda could not care less about you after the sale. I'll be buying a Toyota rav 4 after driving a corolla for 5 years. The rav4 has a real transmission, 6 speed auto vs. the junk CVT high maintenance cost and questionable durability.

Welcome Mark. Apples to Oranges. Odyssey is now the highest consumer rated minivan in North America, and comes equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. We've all purchased problematic cars or trucks in the past. Do you currently own a late model CR-V?

I just took my 2015 CRV to the dealer for the vibration they told me some vibration is normal I can not believe they told me this. I bought this car for the Honda name, reliability and boy was I wrong then they told me they would replace some parts but I don't believe they have a clue to the problem this is such a disappointment I will follow up after the repair

Certainly not consistent with all the comments made online. Feeling bad I recommended a Honda CR-V to my sister and it's been a disaster she even switched cars paid more because they could not install navigation inthefirst one at the dealer. Now the vibration issue. I feel your pain.

Alicia (not verified)    June 5, 2015 - 8:01AM

Agreed. This is a major problem. The vibration in my 15 CR-V is not slight..it's very noticeable and very annoying! Once the car warms up it starts to shake like crazy. Completely unacceptable for a brand new vehicle. This is my first and last Honda. After the way Honda has treated us over a defective vehicle they sold us I will never buy or recommend their products to anyone.
If you'd like to use my vehicle for research let me know!!!

Alicia, I am having the same problem. What pisses me off is the dealership hid this issue from me. The sales guy even told me that Honda CRV stereos a made by Bose. This will be my last Honda after having owned Civic, TSX and TL the past 20 years.

Michael. I noticed a big difference in the sound quality in my new CRV because I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado that has Bose speakers which are much better than the speakers in my 2015 CRV. I don't know what speaker brand Honda uses? This will be my last Honda also after buying three in my lifetime. Honda always stood for quality but now anymore.

Parks McCants    June 5, 2015 - 2:03PM

Welcome Stephen. Pay attention! The airbag issue is INDUSTRY-WIDE... Honda's taking care of their end. If you own an effected Honda, take it into your local dealer for recall repair. Thank you.

It's time for me to buy a new car. I've never owned a Honda and I was looking forward to buying a new CRV. It's the best designed, best priced, best made SUV out there. I have delayed my purchase and I've been watching this vibration issue for a while now. Honda has done little if anything to correct it. It's enough for me to disqualify the CRV. That type of aggravation makes the CRV unpalatable at any price. Unless Honda fixes this problem soon, my next car, sadly, will not be a Honda.

John (not verified)    June 6, 2015 - 8:42AM

In contradiction of the article - If only a "small percentage" of 2015 buyers were affected, Honda would not have created a video for damage control.

When pressed, most dealers will now admit that ALL of the 15 cr-vs exhibit the design flaw to some degree. Some people will notice/be bothered by it more than others. My understanding is that issue has to do with the motor mounts/resonance, and a fix for current owners is exceedingly unlikely.

Parks McCants    June 6, 2015 - 12:58PM

Good morning James and John. I just spent a week behind the wheel of 2015 CR-V Touring. Yes, there is a vibration present. No one, including Honda is questioning that. However, comparing CR-V to the competition, I'll still go with Honda. Drive CR-V if you haven't already done so, and then make your purchase decision. You may also note that the 2016 model release will be
coming up in 90 days or so. Take care. It's the best compact SUV $ value in the segment...

Welcome John. I've driven well over 1500 miles in all variants of 2014 and 2015 CR-V. Some come from dealership stock, others outsourced by the Drive Shop. What's your point? Read my latest CR-V review, you'll find it to be an honest assessment of the #1 selling SUV in North America. Take care.

These comments are not directed toward anyone individual who has responded to their CRV whoes but to everyone reading this post......Same vibration issue with my 2015 CRV:(. 3,222 miles and getting WORSE with mileage! Reported after 37 miles on the car. Told nothing wrong, live with it:(. Currently working with the dealership to get a different vehicle or MONEY BACK....If I decide to stay with Honda I am interested only in the CRV. I drove an HRV which is just not the quality of the CRV, costs as much and has NO track record....I will not trade for another 2015 because there is absolutely NO gaurentee it will not shake! So do I wait for a 2016 which has the EXACT engine and pray I don't get a defective one of these.? If they don't have a fix for the 15 they don't have one for the 16 either:( Think I will have to say GOODBYE to Honda. I, as many others are MOST angry for the dishonesty Honda has displayed along with the down play or outright lies dealerships have told just to move their 15 inventory:( HONDA CORPERATION STEP UP NOW AND FIX OR RECALL THE CRV AND DONT KEEP SWINDLING CUSTOMERS. Doesn't this qualify for a car NOT sold in good faith???? And please until you pay $25,000 and up for a car that vibrates and gets worse as more miles are displayed , do not say it's NO big deal and "live with it"! Disappointed in Honda:(

Make sure if someday 10 years from now decide to sell it to someone that complains about the vibration, that you tell them to deal with it. Check out your state's lemon law and maybe go that route which is what I am doing. Under the category of "affects value".

James Bennett (not verified)    June 6, 2015 - 2:06PM

If I owned a 1926 Ford Model A I would find some vibration acceptable. I will not tolerate that same vibration in a 2015 car that cost me over $30K. It's great that Honda has admitted that they have a problem but they still have done nothing to help existing owners. They may have found the problem but they apparently have not come up with a solution. I am VERY happy that I delayed my purchase. I dodged a bullet on that one. They did a lousy job with the airbag problem also. Their mishandling of the situation went largely unnoticed because it was an industry wide problem. Passing the buck to Takata was a disservice bordering on criminal inaction to anyone who bought their cars. Innocent people died and Honda still ignored it. That is not the type of customer service I expect from Honda. Honda has done considerable damage to their reputation and I no longer trust them to produce a quality automobile. It's too bad because they were the best. It's sad to watch a once fine company go down the toilet.

Sorry to read your sad story Alicia. Assuming that you currently own a 2015 CR-V, your warranty should remedy the problem, if it is a defective part, malfunctioning system, or... anything other than buyer's remorse. If your dealer isn't stepping up to the task, report them to Honda. Best of luck.

This is why its been such a nightmare. I've taken my car to the dealership and had the problem duplicated and documented however Honda has no fix! Also, I have called Honda America and sent them a certified letter. They responded back that this was not a safety issue so there is nothing they can do for me at the moment. You are correct thought; the car is under warranty. Why isn't Honda standing behind their vehicles and fixing them!?
