Honda’s updated response to consumer reported 2015 Honda CR-V vibration

Because Honda cares as much about our CR-V readers as we do...

With 134,660, 2015 Honda CR-Vs sold this year to date, despite a spattering of consumer reported 'at idle' vibration events, CR-V remains the best selling compact SUV in North America; and that’s no small feat with Ford, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota nipping at your proverbial heels.

Torque News has driven the competition in a side by side fair comparison under exacting field conditions. We, like the majority of auto journalist polled, vote 2015 Honda CR-V overall winner in the segment, based on construction quality, interior ergonomics, overall ride and handling characteristics, advanced styling and last but not least, fuel efficiency. We further acknowledge what we believe to be the best engine, CVT combination in the class.

With that said, what’s with the reported vibration issue…

As earlier reported by American Honda Motors and expanded on by Torque News and others, a small percentage of 2015 Honda CR-V buyers have experienced what they perceive as an unacceptable level of interior vibration when CR-V sits at idle engaged in “Drive-mode.” Honda has acknowledged the issue and as promised earlier in this video, to explore the cause and effect of the video, and, address an appropriate remedy.

This is where ‘things” get a bit tricky in a world where automotive engineering and a company's intent to serve the end user often collide; at times the individual customer’s perception comes into play.

In short

The cause and effect of a reported problem, short of an obviously defective component, is more often that not difficult to identify, much less replace within a “chapped” customer’s timeline. What one consumer views as a blaring nuisance, or defect may be an unknown or an acceptable condition to another; none the less, bothersome just the same to the unsatisfied new or used car owner.

What does Honda have to say about this and what does the future hold for 2015 CR-V owners?

Honda’s comment

When asked to comment on the issue at hand, Honda points to the use of an identical Earth Dreams ™ direct injected 4 cylinder i-VTEC engine and CVT transmission in the very popular 2015 Accord without incident of excessive vibration. This points to a (possible) “harmonics” vibration transmitted through the CR-V ACE structure or attached frame member.

Note: Although the pin-pointed source of vibration has not been divulged to Torque News, Honda assures us and CR-V owners that the acknowledged vibration presents no danger of present or future component failure, and, that the company is working diligently on an acceptable fix. On a personal note, Torque News did not experience unusual vibration when initially test driving 2015 CR-V. we will revisit CR-V this week.

According to Honda spokesperson Chris Martin, “we're working to come up with solutions that will address several different customer perceptions of the vibration at idle. While it
is annoying to some, it is not noticed by most, and it does not represent a
detriment to the safety or reliability of the vehicle," states Chris.

Base on past dealership experience and subsequent product recall time line: Our advice to Torque News readers that currently experience an ongoing (slight) vibration issue with Honda CR-V is to report it to your dealer and patiently wait for a notification of recall from American Honda Motors. CR-V is the best selling SUV in North America. And, Honda will do all that is necessary to preserve the overall quality reputation of CR-V while serving the customer.

Welcome J Little. No, I simply write what I experience. I've written drive reviews on every car in the Honda and Acura lineup, and find the lot to be superior to the competition on most levels. On comparing 2015 CR-V to the 2014 CR-V, I discovered a much improved vehicle as to fit and finish, ride comfort, engine power and safety. Is there any vibration experienced while driving CR-V, certainly. Is it dangerous? No. Will it cause future mechanical problems with the vehicle, no. I'm still waiting for that cheque...Take care. B.T.W, how's your CR-V running?

My 2015 CR-V vibrates at low rpms while driving. I was drive TOYOTA more than 15 years whiteout this problem. and went to the HONDA service today, they said that the issue has been identified by HONDA and will be notice all customer sooner later to the fix. I wish that HONDA can inform me as soon as they are ready to fix this problem.

I have owned 5 Honda CRV before purchasing my 2015 CRV in August 2015, and I have the same problems, vibrations at idle and when driving. Honda needs to fix this immediately. I am disappointed that Honda did not find this before selling these models. I wonder how many more CRV owners that have the same problem?!

I'm glad I found these postings. My wife and I just test drove a 2015 CRV and were seriously considering purchasing the vehicle, but couldn't figure out what the vibration was. We drove two separate vehicles with the same results. At highway speeds the car had a strange vibration. We loved everything about the car, but will NOT be buying one now.

Hi everyone...
I got my 2015 CRV few days ago,,,I noticed that coarse vibrations with the idling and when the RPM is around 500,,,of course it is sooooooo botheing and annoying specially when i found that it is very common and nearly all customers have the same complaint.
I searched alot on line and found that some solve that problem by many ways like...turn on the head light, use the AC,or the defrost which all lead to raise the RPM into 750 or 800,
Why dosenot Honda Recall that model and update the software and make the rpm at idiling is 800 and not 500 ..is not an easy way to solve that problem???

So I took mine in and they did a software update. It reduced the vibration some when I am driving, I don't feel quite like I'm going to stall when accelerating. However, I think the vibration in idle is worse. I have kids with special needs and it is really bothering my son when he is a passenger in the car. The dealer had me drive another one to see if it was "just the car" or there was something wrong with mine. The other car was worse right away. Frustrating to pay that much money for something that doesn't run new. I've never had a luxury car, so I'm not comparing to a Lexus. I'm comparing the roughness in ride to my husband's Toyota Tundra.

I owned a 2004 CR-V for 11 years. This summer, I planned on replacing it with a 2015 CR-V. After researching the car, I came across the vibration issue. Thinking of waiting for the 2016, our 2004 was totaled in an accident. So, we needed to buy a new vehicle and had to pass on the 2016. Test drove a 2015 CR-V. It had a slight vibration at that time, but the car had only 21 miles on it. Not willing to take a chance on the vibration becoming a major problem, we passed on the CR-V and after testing out a Nissan Rogue, Mazda 5 and RAV4, we ended up with the RAV4. Have owned many Toyotas in the past. No regrets. We really like it a lot. Very glad we didn't take a chance on the vibrator. BTW, I also own a 2013 Accord, which is a charm. Prior to that we had a 2003 Accord which was also a great car.

I, like many 2015 Cr V owners am experiencing the vibration issue. Good news though, Honda released a service bulletin on Nov 5th, 2015 with a fix for the issue that includes a new trans mount, head restraints, tailgate damper kit as well as a pcm software update, depending on the vibration experience you have. It's unfortunate that we had to experience this. Other than the obvious, I love the vehicle.

Expect nothing from Honda concerning the vibration issue. I am on my second 2015 CRV LX and have driven five of them. Those five all have the vibration. I have been through the process of complaints, service dept., arbitration, etc. In my opinion, Honda pressures their employees to deny, deny, deny. They would tell you they don't feel anything if it had square wheels. Honda pressured the dealership employee (who shall remain nameless) I was corresponding with via email by threatening their job. NO PAPER TRAIL they are told . American Honda denied me ANYTHING in writing. How is that for confidence!! The arbitration committee mirrored Honda's response that there is no safety concerns. I was also denied an extended warranty for compensation. If Honda is so confident in their product, why not give those affected a ten yr. 100,000 mi. warranty. Honda claims my used car value has even gone up as the dealership offered me $17,0000.00 for a trade in value. This rag will go at the end of the warranty period.

My 2015 CR-V had no problem until about 10,000 Km. Now it has a severe vibration, felt through the steering column, at around 1000 rpm when on light load in Drive - at all road speeds. At idle there is only (?) small vibration. Using the "sport" setting on the transmission the vibration is tolerable presumably because the rpm is higher. Going back to the dealer shortly for review and to lodge complaint. Very disappointing.

Have been a Honda loyalist for a long time and bought this 2015 CRV with high hopes. Certainly disappointed with the idle vibration issue and hope Honda would quickly fix the issue and win the trust back. The issue started few days after we purchased and even the kids ask why the CRV is vibrating ! Have reported the problem to the dealer and i guess have to wait now !!!

11th Honda and… (not verified)    November 28, 2015 - 6:55PM

We Were contacted by our Honda dealer in August of 2015, to trade in our 2014 CRV EX-L on a 2015 CRV Touring model. THE DEALER contacted us. we had no intention on trading in our car but they lowered our payment and upgraded us to the Touring model. Sounded too good to be true. This being my 8th new Honda the dealership had the car and paperwork ready upon my arrival and it was sign and drive. The CRV is my wife vehicle so I never drove it. My first time behind the wheel was about a month after purchasing it (1100 miles). AS soon as we backed out of the garage and stopped at the end of the driveway it felt like the a/c compressor kicked on. I looked at the control and everything was off. I then accelerated and about 30 mph 1900 rpm it felt like i ran over a rumble strip on the side of the highway. then again at around 50mph 1800 rpm. I just thought maybe it was in my head. then as i got to my first stop it started vibrating again....
So I have read every forum, contacted Honda, contacted my dealer and there was no fix. 2 weeks ago the service manager called me and said the service bulletin had been released and asked me to bring it in.
This morning I took it to the dealership. 3900 miles and 13 weeks old I was informed that the vehicle would need new motor mounts, the rear hatch would get a new part, the transmission would need shimmed up to meet the new motor position, the radiator would have rubber mounts installed and the software would need updated and i would lose 0.7-2 mpg in fuel economy.......OR
the software update would fix it. two hours later my vehicle was "perfect" the service tech gave me the keys and I drove off. made its to the end go the parking lot and noticed nothing was fixed and the idle was now at 800 rpm or higher.
Livid. I went in the front door of the dealership to test drive a 2016 IDENTICAL car. Car performed perfect. Just as You would expect a $34k car to do. I Then exposed my p[lan and explained the situation to the sales staff who KNEW about the problem.
long story short to get my 2015 crv in an identical 2016 model with no vibration will cost me $62 a month to get a crv that drives as expected.
I am a very loyal Honda customer. Have owned 11 Hondas 8 of them being brand new and this will be my last one. I would rather trade it in on a new brand and eat all the negative equity a 3 month old car obtains than have a bandaid put on the car by a service tech getting paid warranty rate, or increase my payment just for a vehicle to work as expected.
15 year loyal customer and Last Honda I will ever buy

Gina C (not verified)    November 28, 2015 - 7:59PM

So upset about this car. Brand new and just over $30,000 put down for a vibrating machine. My previous car was 10+ years old and drive so smoothly. I wanted a sleek new update, but would now do anything for a full refund- which I have been told numerous times by multiple Honda reps that it is not going to happen and that I would loose money because the car would be considered "used" if I have it back. Honda did us all wrong and I can't believe that they still sell this piece of junk!

Reues (not verified)    December 11, 2015 - 3:21AM

I loved my 2015 Honda Touring until the vibration began to increase in frequence. Now I believe I am stuck with a 32k piece of junk. Honda needs to fix these vehicles before mass casulties occur.

Steve (not verified)    December 12, 2015 - 10:38AM

i complained to edmunds for still giving this shaker box a great review. Their response to me was that they stand behind their review. So much for depending on them for honest reviews as it's pretty obvious to me that Homda has "influenced" them to downplay this major deal breaker. Read what real drivers say and note how upset they are over this. What pisses me off is they continue to give it great marks. Class action lawsuits and still rate it high? You can't trust the professional reviews similar to politicians. I feel for people who shelled out 30k for a shaker box. Contact edmunds and call them to the rug on this.

Do you own a 2015 Honda CR-V Steve? If so, are you aware of the 19 page service bulletin that was released to certified Honda dealers last month? I, like Edmunds, also give Honda CR-V a high rating based on my extended drive review experience with the Touring edition. While I did note some vibration in the steering wheel of our latest review vehicle, I didn't believe it to be a deal breaker. That's my personnel assessment based on an 800 mile test drive. The subject vehicle had 10,000 miles showing on the odometer. Best of luck with your preferred service department. Please keep us posted as to any progress in mitigating the vibration. Thanks.

Pius Ottiger (not verified)    December 13, 2015 - 12:48PM

The CRV vibration problem is totally unacceptable and Honda's delay in taking corrective action is an insult to consumers. Just think if in the pharmaceutical industry you provide a product that causes a little bleeding every time you take the medication would you still take the medication?

Best Regards

A 19 page tsb? That inspiires real confidence. Drive the Acura suv to experience the car as it should be then report back.
