Honda’s updated response to consumer reported 2015 Honda CR-V vibration

Because Honda cares as much about our CR-V readers as we do...

With 134,660, 2015 Honda CR-Vs sold this year to date, despite a spattering of consumer reported 'at idle' vibration events, CR-V remains the best selling compact SUV in North America; and that’s no small feat with Ford, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota nipping at your proverbial heels.

Torque News has driven the competition in a side by side fair comparison under exacting field conditions. We, like the majority of auto journalist polled, vote 2015 Honda CR-V overall winner in the segment, based on construction quality, interior ergonomics, overall ride and handling characteristics, advanced styling and last but not least, fuel efficiency. We further acknowledge what we believe to be the best engine, CVT combination in the class.

With that said, what’s with the reported vibration issue…

As earlier reported by American Honda Motors and expanded on by Torque News and others, a small percentage of 2015 Honda CR-V buyers have experienced what they perceive as an unacceptable level of interior vibration when CR-V sits at idle engaged in “Drive-mode.” Honda has acknowledged the issue and as promised earlier in this video, to explore the cause and effect of the video, and, address an appropriate remedy.

This is where ‘things” get a bit tricky in a world where automotive engineering and a company's intent to serve the end user often collide; at times the individual customer’s perception comes into play.

In short

The cause and effect of a reported problem, short of an obviously defective component, is more often that not difficult to identify, much less replace within a “chapped” customer’s timeline. What one consumer views as a blaring nuisance, or defect may be an unknown or an acceptable condition to another; none the less, bothersome just the same to the unsatisfied new or used car owner.

What does Honda have to say about this and what does the future hold for 2015 CR-V owners?

Honda’s comment

When asked to comment on the issue at hand, Honda points to the use of an identical Earth Dreams ™ direct injected 4 cylinder i-VTEC engine and CVT transmission in the very popular 2015 Accord without incident of excessive vibration. This points to a (possible) “harmonics” vibration transmitted through the CR-V ACE structure or attached frame member.

Note: Although the pin-pointed source of vibration has not been divulged to Torque News, Honda assures us and CR-V owners that the acknowledged vibration presents no danger of present or future component failure, and, that the company is working diligently on an acceptable fix. On a personal note, Torque News did not experience unusual vibration when initially test driving 2015 CR-V. we will revisit CR-V this week.

According to Honda spokesperson Chris Martin, “we're working to come up with solutions that will address several different customer perceptions of the vibration at idle. While it
is annoying to some, it is not noticed by most, and it does not represent a
detriment to the safety or reliability of the vehicle," states Chris.

Base on past dealership experience and subsequent product recall time line: Our advice to Torque News readers that currently experience an ongoing (slight) vibration issue with Honda CR-V is to report it to your dealer and patiently wait for a notification of recall from American Honda Motors. CR-V is the best selling SUV in North America. And, Honda will do all that is necessary to preserve the overall quality reputation of CR-V while serving the customer.

Welcome Keesh. You're the first to report excessive vibration in Accord. What model, engine, year? Now, if you'r reffering to a mild vibration at idle, or when transitioning to a stop, I've experienced a mild vibration in all late model direct injected 4 cylinder engines. Please expand a bit on your comment. Thank you.

My 2015 CRV Touring suffered all three stages of vibration. Idle, between 1100 & 1400 RPM and at higher speed. Honda has installed all three updates that include software update, engine and radiator mounts and tailgate modifications. The result is that vibrations are essentially gone, CRV is quieter, CVT / engine seem to respond faster and smoother. Gas mileage has not dropped despite indication that Stage Two modification would cause drop. Worth the effort and persistence to get resolved. Only downside is that it took Honda almost 10 months to effect the fix.

I have a 2015 crv touring I have had all three of the recommended service fixes for the vibration problem and guess what it still vibrates, cost me 34 k. they should of call it a SR&R for (shake rattle & roll) won't ever buy a Honda product again . the dealers should be held accountable.Oh ya the service fixes resulted in a drop in miles like 23 around town and 25 highway now, I should kept my old Suzuki it was twice the car that the CRV is not? Class Action lawsuit bring it on.

I have been looking very closely at purchasing a 2015 or 2016 Honda CRV but after reading the many problems some have experienced think I will look at another alternative!

manuel (not verified)    January 19, 2016 - 6:25PM

I have the same issue with my 2014 CRV. The vibration started December 2015 exactly 1 year after I bought it brand new. First I noticed that it will vibrate after a full stop the turn right & accelerate normally. I brought it to the Dealer for repair, they said they did an update of the software, however the problem got worst. Instead of only vibrating when & turn right, now it also vibrates when driving straight. In fact I could feel noise & vibration @ 70 mph. After the software update, I noticed the fuel range indicator being erratic, the fuel range goes up & down for example, I have a full tank that registers 400 miles, after 10 miles or less it drops to 370 then go up to maybe 390 miles.

I have the same vibration problem with my 2015 CRV in my front end when my speed hits 70. Honda dealer balanced all the tires, it did not fix the problem, then they did a "road force balance" on all the tires which reduced the vibration about 70%. Been about three months now and will take it back for another try.

We paid $30,000 cash for a 2015 Honda CRV and get a vibration that is annoying as all getout. If I was making monthly payments, I'd park it at the bank and let them have it back.
My hubby has been in touch with the dealer and with corporate Honda in Calif. and they basically told us 'too bad, so sad for you'. It is not a safety issue. It vibrates while idle and it vibrates when it reaches the 20-30 and then 40-50 mph. I am SO disappointed in this. They are more than willing to replace the mounts with some gel-type mounts and add 300 pounds of weight to the back of the vehicle. This does not fix the problem!!! Also we were told by Honda corporate office that we would only lose .7 miles to the gallon. The dealer says it will be 4 to 5 miles to the gallon loss, plus they want us to sign a paper saying we know and accept this fact. NO WAY. The reason we bought the CRV is it gets better gas mileage than others.
This is not a light issue. The problem is that the motor itself is out of balance and the right thing for Honda to do would be to simply replace the motors in these troubled CRV's. Grrrr.

Welcome Ann. Your dealership is way out of line! Find another willing to follow Honda repair guide lines. You mention adding 300 lbs to the rear of CR-V, how so? Based on the response from our readers and consumers interviewed, the "fix" is effective. We have read of a 2 mpg drop in combined MPG. I agree with you, this is not a light issue. But, what I also know from driving Toyota and Kia direct injected engines, they all vibrate to a certain degree. It is the nature of the beast. Best luck to you. Please keep us posted as to progress.

The mechanics at the dealership told us and we received a printed copy of how they fix this. They add a 'damper' (the 300 pound weight) to the rear hatch. They disassemble the hatch, add the 'damper' and put it back together again. We're not sure what to do at this point. I know the vibration is bad, that's all. And, it can't be good on the seals and other components. I'm no mechanic but that's my thinking.

Mark (not verified)    April 4, 2016 - 10:48AM

Adding 300 pounds of weight to the hatch will reduce the grip on the front tires by taking weight off of them due to the center of gravity being shifted to the rear. It will also take away gas mileage. Your thinking is along the right line. Anyone with some common sense would know that constant vibration like this will eventually result in metal fatigue and something failing including the frame itself. The 300 pound weight is not a "fix". It's a band aid that won't stop the long term effects like reduced gas mileage and reduced grip on the front tires. Watch them come out with a recommendation for reduced air pressure in the front tires and a sticker to cover the existing door frame plate with the tire pressures on it. I've owed some Honda's and they do not care about fixing any of their design problems including their automatic transmission fiasco back in the late 90's to mid 2000's.

manuel (not verified)    January 23, 2016 - 4:06PM

2 of my previous honda car transmission prematurely died. Maybe when I have no more warranty they will say something is wrong with it. From it seems like dealers prefer cash than free warranty service. I might just trade mine this fall & it will be my last honda.

I bought my last Honda in 1998 with an Odyssey and the transmission problem that they refused to repair. It was a design problem different than 1999 and up problem. The torque converter lockup would not work after 3 to 5 thousand miles throwing a code along with the RPM level not dropping at cruising speed with the gas mileage going from 28 down to 23. The fluid had to be changed to get the mechanism to work again. I will never buy another Honda. Their latest stupidity is the CVT transmission failure and their computer program change to "fix" it. The best CVT won't last much over 150,000 miles these days anyway and they cost at least 3500 and up to 6500 to replace. I had the check engine code from about 1800 miles up to 80,000 miles off and on with multiple fluid changes along with taking 2 years to get the screwed up timing belt dealer work repaired. One of my civic's had moisture in both headlamps which they changed and mess up the wiring to the headlamps in the process. No start condition if the 94 civic was left for more than 3 days without starting it. They would not change out the pressure check valve. They just said they could not find the problem. I think a lot of it is the dealer. Honda needs to do more research and development to eliminate most of these design flaws. They aren't any better than the american nameplate junk out there now.

Dona (not verified)    January 27, 2016 - 9:33PM

Went to my dealer today to report about the slight vibration and they wanted to reprogram the software but I need to sign a waiver because they said it might get worse.

My 2014 CRV got worse after they did that TSB 15-086 software update. It has more vibration, it messed up my fuel range indicator (range fluctuates up & down). It accelerates faster than normal & it seems like burning more gas than normal. I have to monitor my odometer to make sure nothing is wrong.

David (not verified)    January 29, 2016 - 10:57PM

I bought the 2016 Touring CRV in December and it clearly vibrates. I brought it back to the dealer in a couple of weeks, they checked it out, and said it was normal. Well, I've driven quite a few cars in my lifetime, and I know it's NOT normal. I wish I knew about this issue before I bought my car.

@David. The guys at the service desk will smile and only do what they can but you need to see the service manager. That's what I did on my third trip to the Honda dealer. He even test drove the car. They got the vibration fixed while the car is stopped in gear but I still have a slight vibration at 70 MPH in the steering wheel and front end. It comes and goes. If you want to see more complaints on this issue, Google "Honda CRV vibration" and you will be shocked. Good luck all.

Welcome David. If you truly believe the vibration to excessive, hold your Honda dealer accountable. There is program in place to mitigate unusual or excessive vibration. Please keep us posted as to any progress. Thanks. Note: All Honda dealers are independent businesses, some better than others. All are held accountable by American Honda Motor Company.

manuel (not verified)    January 30, 2016 - 5:45PM

If there is a class action law suit they should also included 2014. It is basically the same car w/ different headlights.

manuel (not verified)    January 30, 2016 - 5:47PM

I am now waiting for fall, I might trade mine for RAV 4. Maybe when the warranty is expired then they will say something is wrong which means big buck out of the pocket.

Honda Fan (not verified)    January 31, 2016 - 2:21PM

I purchased my honda cr-v 01-17-2015
It shakes on idling with headlight off, it consumes too much gas on idling, it doesn't safe me gas while on eco mode, I don't know why?
When driving you hear too much noise from the road,
The car i thought its a japaness car but not, only around 20% made in japaness then rest is junk, cheap stuff.
I owned a honda civic 1996 and it was great, but this new car it doesn't worth more than 18000$.
I will never ever buy Honda cars,
I'm now interested in German cars, a BMW, Mercedes or VW, but never going to buy Honda or toyota till they are 100% made in japan.

Larry (not verified)    February 4, 2016 - 11:18PM

At 3600 miles the transmission on my 2015 CRV began to slip at speeds between 40 and 60. It also vibrated while sitting at lights. My Honda dealer replaced the transmission (at the factory's direction) and also did the updated vibration fix. I picked up the car this evening and it drove like a charm. No vibration at idle, and a smooth transmission. Keeping my fingers crossed that the fix is permanent. I am very satisfied with Honda's response to this problem with my car. I also have an Acura MDX with 110,000 on it that I bought new in '03 and have never had a problem with it.

I own a honda cr-v 2015 and it's a piece of shit,
I saw this at a website and you may like it guys;

Mercedes-Benz vehicles may come with an "Attention Assistant" to alert you if you fall asleep behind the wheel, but the 2015 Honda CR-V has a different approach: just shake the heck out of you so you never fall asleep in the first place.

timmie arrington (not verified)    February 22, 2016 - 7:30PM

first new car I ever bought it had 27 miles on it had it a year this month has 20000 miles on it now and the vibrations is getting worst and started to feel transmission jump had 2 fixes I lost around 4 to 5 miles per gallon its in the shop now being worked on

Joan Henann (not verified)    March 24, 2016 - 3:59PM

I own 2015 Honda CRV AWD. THE VIBRATION is terrible. The steering wheel vibrates so badly my hands are shaking. The drivers seat (since I am driving) and my body is vibrating because of seat, car, and steering wheel. I had mode 1 repair yesterday to fix this problem. It did nothing to help. I will take back to dealer for mode 2 next week.
IF THIS CANNOT BE FIXED CAR SHOULD BE RECALLED. This is the first honda i have ever owned and I like the SUV but sitting in the car at idle at stop lights is exhausting and I feel if you cannot fix problem - recall car. I also think you're "fixing technicians at my local dealership are not experienced enough to fix problem."

So you will have a lot of angry customers and negative publicity, so PLEASE TRY AND FIX PROBLEM OR GIVE CUSTOMER CHOICE OF RETURNING CAR.

Dhams (not verified)    March 25, 2016 - 2:20AM

I bought 2016 CRV EX 3 weeks back and it vibrates at idle. Sometimes it's minor but most of the times it's annoying. I was told by dealer that 2016 models are with fix so I bought it.

I called sales rep and she fixed my appointment with service dept. I am not confident that it will be fixed permanently so what are the other options ?

I wish I would not have bought honda at all but now kind of stuck and very frustrated

Gurjeet Gill (not verified)    April 3, 2016 - 8:19PM

This is not a minor problem, My crv vibrates at low rpms at idle and while driving. It has also gotten worse, any attempts and downplaying this problem is merely damage control by honda. They know they have a serious problems. They cars should not continue sell these vehicles, period. And as a matter of fact most of them have the problem, some worse than others. I repeat, this is not a trivial problem. I challenge anyone out there to place down $40,000.00 and see how unenjoyable the experience can be. Honda and it's dealers are still treating this like a joke. Honda tried to fix my crv . . There is no fix. When I am take with service cuoncentent they told me I did not do any thing you call to Honda . No body do any thing .. Full unhappy Defective product. End of story.
