Autocar has learned from various sources at the German automaker that AMG will be leading the development of the next SL. This is part of plan by Mercedes-Benz’s incoming research and development boss, Ola Källenius to make the SL have “a more sporting character” than the existing model.
“It is being kept secret at the moment, but AMG is heading the engineering of the new SL. It’s going to be a vastly different proposition to today’s model,” said an insider.
The next SL is expected to use a new modular platform known as MSA (modularen sportwagen architektur). This platform will also be used for the replacement for the SLC roadster. One other key change will be the SL losing the hard top it has used since the fifth-generation model and going with a soft-top. This is to help cut weight.
The engine lineup is expected to have a new turbocharged inline-six, V8, and AMG models with a twin-turbo V8 and V12.
Autocar expects the next SL will be revealed in 2018.
