GMC is planning a full display of GMC HUMMER EV products for SEMA, including two of the all-new 2022 GMC HUMMER EV supertrucks and one 2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV. One of the truck versions will be tricked-out with several of the new accessories already being produced for the highly anticipated EV. One of the most intriguing is a large tent that can be placed on the HUMMER’s roof. The tent plays into the latest Overlanding craze, where drivers take their vehicles off the beaten path into the great outdoors, not just off-roading but staying in the wilderness for days or weeks at a time.
GMC SEMA Display Plans
One of the GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 trucks on display will look like the production model. The other Edition 1 truck will display dozens of the 200 specially designed accessories that will be available for owners to customize their all-new EV. There will also be on display an Edition 1 version of the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV as well as the Chip Ganassi Racing Extreme-E off-road race vehicle that is based off the EV SUV design.
“The all-new GMC HUMMER EV Pickup and SUV naturally lend themselves to the growing demand for personalization,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC. “Their commanding looks draw attention wherever they go, and our accessories portfolio is designed to offer customers more choices to tailor their vehicle with off-road functionality, lifestyle integration and styling enhancements.”
The annual Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, in Las Vegas, Nevada, attracts hundred of thousands of vehicle enthusiasts from all over the world. Last year, it was held virtually because of the COVIC pandemic. SEMA is one of the most popular events in the automobile industry. It is the chance for fans to see the latest aftermarket products for all types of vehicles. SEMA estimates more than $40 billion was spent on specialty-automotive aftermarket sales in 2020, with pickup personalization representing the largest sector of the market.
“We knew from the outset that the strong character of the HUMMER EV would inspire a high degree of personalization from owners,” said Humberto Ortiz, lead designer for performance accessories. “The accessories developed for GMC HUMMER EVs are inspired by its extreme performance capabilities. The accessories’ design and functionality integration make them extensions of the vehicles themselves.”
The 2022 GMC HUMMER EV will have auxiliary switches that can be controlled through the main infotainment center. That gives the driver the ability to easily control accessories like off-road lighting.
Some of the accessories that will be on display at SEMA include:
- A hard Power Retractable Tonneau Cover
- An off-road recovery kit
- A 50-inch roof-mounted off-road light bar
- Front off-road auxiliary lights
- Rocker protector with integrated assist steps
- A bold, uniquely styled bed-mounted vertical spare tire carrier
- Sky Panel Storage Tray Set for eTrunkTM
- Unique accessory wheel design in Tech Bronze (with Tech Bronze center cap and black lugs)
- Under-seat organizer and I-Bar storage
- Cargo management rails
Many of the HUMMER accessories were designed in parallel with the vehicles so they fit as if they were added on the assembly line. Several other manufacturers have had tremendous success with accessories that are engineered along with the vehicle. No word at this point if the HUMMER accessories will carry a factory-backed warranty.
“Their design and fit are integrated with the vehicle like regular production components,” said Ortiz. “It means they appear and function as if they were installed on the assembly line, with production-level quality, too, compared to universal-type aftermarket components.”
One example is the curved 50-inch light bar. Ortiz said, “Its curved profile matches the contour of the roof while the mounting stanchions share the same design language as the rest of the vehicle.”
New Ultium Battery Platform
The 2022 GMC HUMMER EV will be the first vehicle built on GM’s all-new Ultium battery platform. Ultium, which can be reconfigured to fit several different sizes of vehicles, will underpin all of GM’s future EVs. It will power the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ as well as the electric Silverado and the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV.
Pre-production of the GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 Pickup has begun at Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center. The first production models of the pickup are expected by the end of the year. The 2024 GMC HUMMER SUV model debut is planned for 2023. Initial Canadian HUMMER EV Pickup availability is expected fall 2022.
SEMA will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, Nov. 2-5, 2021.
