Three reasons that 2016 Ram 1500 owners should be worried about their fuel sensors

The owner of a 2016 Ram 1500 is concerned because his fuel sensor light came on unexpectedly. Members of a truck forum point out that this problem is happening quite frequently.

There is nothing more worrisome than the thought of being stranded in the middle of nowhere with vehicle trouble. That was the cloud hanging over the head of a 2016 Ram 1500 owner. Mollie, from Arizona, told members of a Ram truck forum, “I have a 2016 Ram 1500 Longhorn and tonight I filled the tank and about 100 miles later the engine light came on (solid) and the fuel gauge went to empty and the fuel range went to low fuel. Called Ram customer care and a case was opened and they suggested I get hold of the dealer. I will contact the dealer but I'm 60 miles from the dealer and I'm concerned if I can drive that far with these warning indicators. Any else have this problem?”

Engine lights often signal long term consequences

Most of us have learned over the last few years that a “check engine” light can mean bad gas, but a solid engine light is a different animal and no one wants to do long term damage to a vehicle. Plus, having the fuel gauge drop would suggest a major leak and the possibility of a fire.

Service department admits this is a known complaint

Mollie checked in with Ram customer care and was surprised at the response. “Talked with customer care today and they opened a star case, also spoke with dealer, also spoke with tech and set up appointment for Monday morning. Tech said they have had several issues like this lately.”

Fastback says it happened to him, in Texas, repeatedly. “I had that happen intermittently for months. Finally they filed a STAR case on it, and eventually the fuel pump was replaced. I haven't seen the issue since.”

Marsh had it happen, in Long Island, as well! “I had the same issue, turned out to be the fuel sensor, dealer replaced and corrected the issue.”

Replacing the sensor is expensive

Mollie told members of the group that his dealer appears to have solved the problem. “The dealer removed the fuel tank and replaced the fuel pump assembly, all is well now just hope that I have no more fuel pump issues.”

Mollie is lucky that his vehicle was still under warranty and they fixed the problem. Most people don’t know that most of the fuel sensors are now part of the fuel pump assembly, so to fix a problem like this they have to change the fuel pump. That means they have to drain the fuel tank, remove it and switch out the fuel pump. It takes almost a whole day and can run close to a thousand dollars. So if you start to develop problems try to have it taken care of under warranty, waiting can cost you a bundle. I have not seen many complaints from other Ram model years, but if you own a 2016 Ram 1500, it is good to be aware.

Fuel Gauge drops to empty while driving. then the low fuel light comes on and "dinging" sound. Alternates to working and not working every few seconds. I can live with the gauge going back and forth, as it reads correctly every few seconds. I don't want to spend a lot on the '98, So, can I just turn off the dinging sound?

Just bought out the lease of my 2017 Big Horn - fuel sensor failure @ 21K miles. Happened a couple times, warning on then off. Now it's on with check engine light. Both local dealerships have a 2 week wait to get in for service. Not happy right now.

**** Call this number. 866-726-4636. It is a great way to start documenting that there is a mass issue with the fuel gauge.I called and complained that there is no recall. They document the problem and keep a record. I have a 2015 Ram 1500 with 35k miles. My sensor is dead in the "gas" Only when I fill it up does it go back up and fails at 3/4 tank. Why pay 1,000+ when your going to replace it with the same POS plastic that will fail in another 2 years. They need a recall ASAP.

2016 Ram 1500. Started having an issue at 46k. At first when it reached 1/4 of a tank it would drop to zero, and the engine light would come on. Now, at 48k it will drop to zero at a half of a tank. Dealer told me $780.00 to fix. I was always under the assumption that when a check engine light came on, it would be covered under a warranty until 50k. Guess I'm both wrong and beat.

Same issue. Fuel sensor failure. Contacted dealer to fix. Dealer commented that others in this area are having this same issue. Sensor bounces around - from working - to showing empty when truck has 3/4 tank of gas. Engine light on as well when the sensor fails.

I have a 2016 Ram 1500 and the fuel light came on even though I have 3/4 tank of gas and indicated fuel sensor fail. Now the engine light is on. I only have 32000 miles on the truck. This isn't the only problem I have had. At 14000 miles I had a collapsed lifter. These trucks are junk.

I have a 2017 Ram, 5.7. It has 28000 miles on it. Now my fuel gauge goes on and off at unpredictable intervals. I have the optional 32 gallon tank and the fuel gauge has never been correct. It shows almost empty but will only hold 24 gallons. I will call the number James listed above just to get it documented. It is difficult to be hopeful that the dealer will do anything. I may drop the tank and replace the fuel pump myself.

My 2014 Ram 1500 is having the same issue, literally after filling my tank and driving about 100miles. I called the number James listed and got it documented. My truck has 89,000 miles on it and it looks like I will have to pay $1000 to get it fixed as I commute at least 200 miles a day and I’m due for an emissions now. This sucks!!!

Fuel level sensor fail at 60000 miles 2016 big Horn 5.7 I found a good bit of info on iTunes gonna replace myself I'm not a mechanic gonna use Delphi efg1439 from Auto zone about $260.00 life time warranty

2014 Ram 1500 Big Horn edition fuel sensor failure 78,000. Most likely from reading about all the owners having problems this is a design flaw. Dodge Ram should do the right thing and pro-rate the repair.

I have a 2015 Dodge Ram Big Horn ! I have had the fuel gauge go out and engine light come on for the last 10,000 miles ! I have 150,000 miles on truck and am way over warranty ! My dealer told me about $600 + tax ! I think they should have a recall on this problem because it is a bigger problem than they want to admit ! Has anyone thought this may cause a potential fire !

My check engine light just came on. It also was the fuel pump sensor. I have extended warranty with $100 deductible. The dealer fixed and the total cost was $1035.89.

I have a 2014 Outdoorsman 93k miles on it with a bad fuel sensor as well. Fuel gauge indicates empty and check engine light is on but, it runs just fine. The local dealers are giving me the same song and dance $700 to $1000 to replace. Local mechanic says the he can get the job done in a few hours by lifting the bed to replace the sensor and, he can do it for way less than $700. He says the dealer charges you 8hrs labor to drop the tank but, they lift the bed as well. DODGE (Dead On Delivery Guaranteed Everytime).

Had this issue today on my 2017 Big Horn Ram 1500. Had a half tank when I got home from work. Left to run an errand 2 hours later, gas gauge showed empty, low fuel warning, and malfunction light came on. Went to gas station, topped off (only took 10 gallons so I know it was half full), gauge now shows full, no more low fuel warning, but malfunction light remains. Taking it to dealer tomorrow.

So I just called Ram to file a complaint and ask why they haven’t issued a recall on a VERY known issue. They stated recalls come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Everyone, please go online to:
ncdsusa.org
Consumers
Efile

To file a complaint about this so we can all have our issues fixed and not have to pay an arm and a leg for it!!!

Nora (not verified)    May 15, 2019 - 12:02PM

All of you not willing to put in the work or dish $1k on this issue, please go to:
ncdsusa.org and file a complaint online!
Recalls are not made by Ram but by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and they surely need to be aware of this ongoing issue!

I have a 2017 outdoorsman with 5.7l. I had sensor fail at 15000 than agaim at 32000 and is happening again now at 41000. Dealer has fixed twice. Getting tired of having this happen. Reporting to ncds

I also have a 2016 Ram and I filled my tank last night and 3 times today while driving my service engine light, low fuel indicator and needle went to empty.

I own a 2016 Ram 1500 Tradesman just purchased in August of 2018. After taking it in for recalls, not happy about that. I was driving down the road when I got a message that my fuel sensor had failed. Of course my fuel indicator dropped to empty, this happened 3 times in 10 minutes. My mileage is just at 59008. I called Ram customer care and they do not have a recall on these. With all the comments I’ve read I would think they’d have a recall. Just another aggravating thing to get done.

Scott M (not verified)    June 19, 2019 - 3:39PM

Yup. 9000km and “Fuel Sensor Failure” on my 2017 Ram Outdoorsman. Bought here in Canada 15 months ago. 8 recalls, Centre console replaced. Door seals getting replaced next month, rear sliding widow will not close when ambient temp is above 30C. I have a 20 year old GMC truck base model, one recall and never has the check engine light came on. Never has any part prematurely failed. Can’t speak for the new one’s!

2016 Ram @ 63000 miles. Fuel sensor error and chk engine light when I fill up. After 50 miles or so driving it returns to normal. Just started doing this in June.

2009 RAM 1500, 73K miles, and the fuel level sensor, which is part of the fuel pump, does not work. It constantly reads empty and 0 miles, despite being full. This is a wide-spread problem with this vehicle, as indicated in this article and the comments on the thread. I called Dodge to complain and opened a case with the site linked above.

I want Ram to own up to this poor design and make things right by issuing a recall to correct the issue, or at least cover the costs of the repair for those of us who do encounter this known defect.

I have a 2016 Ram 1500 with 16000 miles on it I have the same problem ck engine light, fuel sensor fail message and intermittent low fuel light, and gauge goes to empty.

Chris (not verified)    July 22, 2019 - 9:28PM

I have a 2016 Ram 5.7 many motor problems.Fuel sensor failed at 60,000 like a clock works when full. Chrysler care was no help this is my 5TH new Dodge/Ram since 1998 and most likely my last.

Bill Rex (not verified)    July 29, 2019 - 1:35PM

I have a 2017 ram and it is doing the same fuel gauge problems as everyone else. I love the truck but may have to go to another brand. I have 42000 miles my fuel sensor failed.
