I Have a 2024 GMC Sierra With Only 3,000 Miles, the Paint Is Already Badly Chipped On My $100,000 Truck, Can Someone at GM Please Explain?

Are GMC's 2024 Sierra trucks plagued with severe paint issues? Owners are reporting alarming paint chips on their new pickups, with one owner expressing disbelief at the state of his $100,000 truck. Here is Colton’s warning for potential GM truck buyers.

Do you know the old saying, they don’t make them like they used to?

That’s what Colton Roberson (@stackinyotes) asks in his TikTok video. Colton is a big GMC fan, owning two 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD AT4X trucks. However, he may not be a fan for much longer.

Imagine the dismay of a truck owner who has just spent $100,000 on a new 2500 HD truck, only to find that the once pristine paint now resembles the aftermath of a sand storm.

Colton's frustration is palpable as he reveals in the video that both of his beloved trucks are badly chipped. The paint, chipped down to the base primer, is not confined to one spot but extends up and down both sides of the trucks.

The overlay on the video says, “Can someone at GM please explain?” As you can imagine, Colton is extremely upset with General Motors.

Colton explains as he walks around the two GMC Sierra HD trucks.

Colton says, “This is my 2024 GMC Sierra with 3,000 miles on it, and the paint on the side of my truck is all chipped,” as he shows the bottom of his truck’s front door.

It doesn’t have oversized tires that stick out beyond the fenders; there is nothing like that. Colton walks around to another 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD pickup parked next to the first truck.

This is also a 2024, and the sides are all chipped, as he shows the badly chipped truck’s lower door.

“Wait, it gets better,” he says, walking to the back of the truck. (or worse, in this case).

He shows the bottom of the rear panel ahead of the rear wheel fender guard and at the rear behind the wheel. Significant chips were taken out of the paint in both places. He says, “There’s no paint.”

Colton walks back to the front of the GMC truck and shows a large area on the bottom rocker panel with the paint removed. “Look how badly it’s chipped,” he says.

He walks around the front of the truck and shows another large area on the bottom of the driver’s door with chipped paint on the rocker panel and six inches up the bottom.

“There are chips everywhere.” He shows the chips down the whole side of the truck. “Chips everywhere, and it’s a $100,000 truck,” he says, shaking his head in disbelief.

He finished saying, “Can someone at GM please explain?”

Is this an isolated case with the GMC Sierra trucks?

Comments in the section below the video suggest that the paint problem is not isolated to Colton's trucks, but a widespread issue with many newer GMC trucks.

East Coast Frank's disappointment is evident in his comment, 'My 22 trail boss has them too, very disappointed.'

I fix stuff - I love the look of the new trucks and the l5p, but GM paint quality is crap.

Mike - It’s the waterborne paint and hard to match and sand.

Chevy - My 2024 Silverado is doing the same cheap paint nowadays

The Wood Chick - Our 2021 was the same thing; the funny thing is they quoted that it needed a paint job, but they won’t cover it under warranty; the truck only had 20,000 km. They told us Alberta has sharper rocks.

Johnson0311 - Chevy white has always been a problem. Flaking clear, chipping paint. It seems to only be an issue with white, in my experience. My black and grey ones have all been fine.

Brian Ashby - My 2023 GMC Canyon is doing the same thing.

Chelsea Cameron - I had a ‘24 GMC come through the shop for a ceramic coating. Brand new - right from the lot.. 54 Microns of paint on every panel. 5 years ago, they were putting on a minimum of 130 microns.

67555JRN - You think the paint is bad, wait till you hear about the transmissions

Colton responds, I already have just got the AT4xHD out from the shop. It was there for 3 months, waiting for a valve body.

Does GMC have a paint issue with their new 2024 Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado trucks?

Auto Body News says that General Motors is facing a class-action lawsuit because of the paint on Chevrolet and GMC’s full-size trucks and SUVs from 2015 through 2019.

The report says plaintiffs claim the clear coat and paint were defective from the factory. The suit involves the 2015-2019 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado and the GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, and Sierra from the same model year.

The lawsuit claims that the clear coat on those vehicles allegedly delaminates, bubbles, flakes, erodes, and blisters.

General Motors issued a TSB.

General Motors is aware of the problem and issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to its dealers in September 2020. The TSB says it covers the 2020-2021 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 and 2020-2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500.

The TSB says, “GM Engineering, along with the assembly plant, is very interested in any type of paint-related defects with the all-new HD Silverado and Sierra trucks.” It says the cause is “under review.”

Conclusion.

General Motors has no official recall for paint issues on the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks.

What should GM truck owners do?

GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado truck owners experiencing paint issues should contact GM customer service (800-462-8782) to report the problem and attempt to get the issue covered under warranty. If that fails, owners can try contacting their local dealership and, if necessary, consider seeking legal advice or joining a class action lawsuit against GM. Owners may be eligible for compensation.

My 2017 Chev Tahoe, dark blue, is horrible on the hood and roof. It showed up a little and then went wild. Under the front PPF chip protection on the hood the paint still looks new. Buffing lessens the haze effect somewhat but the paint is bad and the Tahoe needs a complete stripping.
Now getting fade at the top of the black B pillars.
Bought the Tahoe new, parks outside at work and garaged otherwise.
I hope the class action suits help protect future Chev buyers from bad paint.

I had a 1982 (bought new) VW pickup that did the same thing. Turned out the paint surface was contaminated some how and the top coat did not adhere to the primer. Was a black finish with light gray primer. They eventually paid me to paint it. But a year later while performing a service the Dealer got water in the intake and trashed the diesel engine... That thing got more than 50 miles to the gallon...

My 1017 sierra had to have drivers door repainted. Literally peeling off around rear edge below door handle and could peel off with fingernail. Every week it would get worse so I had it taken down and repainted.
Only area of issue to date.
White in color.

Yes I have a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado with the paint chipping off all around driver side passenger window, it continues to chip away, especially when diving on the freeway little chucks of paint fly off constantly, I believe it will continue till it’s all gone.

I bought my 2024 2500HD in Texas with bubbles in paint. Straight from assembly line with paint defects. No warranty according to GM and local dealer. Local dealer buffed out/sanded down bumps/bubbles. Left swirl marks and another company took care of that. First 3 months truck was at dealer for this. GM and local dealer did nothing else.
