The new Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang has been in the news quite a bit recently, having turned in impressive times at the Car & Driver Lightning Lap trials and the Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car competition. However, if you read one of those articles and thought “I think that I will go to my dealership and order one of those” – you are out of luck. According to Ford Motor Company, the Shelby GT350 and GT350R Mustangs are all sold out for the 2017 model year.
The same is true of the 2017 Ford Focus RS, which is sold out on a global level, helping the Motor Company to achieve what should be its best year of performance vehicles in the modern era.
However, it should be noted that if you really want a Ford Focus RS, a Shelby GT350 Mustang or a Shelby GT350R from the 2017 model year, you can still find them at a dealership – you just can’t order one for the upcoming model year.
Incredible Performance Car Sales in 2016
According to Ford Motor Company, the automaker is one pace to sell more than 200,000 performance cars around the world this year, which is “nearly double” the volume from the 2013 calendar year. This figure includes the Ford Mustang, the Ford Focus ST, the Ford Focus RS and the Ford Fiesta ST, and it may include the low-volume Ford GT supercar and the new Raptor F150 – but the bulk of the performance car sales around the world will come from the Mustang, Focus and Fiesta.
Realistically, the vast majority of Ford performance car sales around the world will be attributed to the new Ford Mustang. Through the first eight months of 2016 in the US market alone, Ford sold 80,829 Mustangs and based on the current average of around 10,000 units per month, the bestselling muscle car is on pace to move around 120,000+ units. Remember, that is just in the US, and while the other markets around the world have much lower sales volume, the new Mustang is sold out in pretty much every other market outside of North America and that should help bolster the already impressive sales numbers for the Mustang in 2016.
Next, the Ford Focus RS and ST, along with the Fiesta ST, will help the Mustang push Ford performance car sales up past the 200,000 mark. There has been no indication as to the sales success of the Focus and Fiesta in ST trim, but the Motor Company has explained that the Focus RS is sold out in every global market.
Finally, the new Ford GT and the new Ford Raptor F150 will will arrive in the final months of 2016 for the 2017 model year. While sales of the Ford GT will be limited to just 250 units and the Raptor F150 will likely be sold in limited numbers in the final months of 2016, both of those vehicles will join the Focus, Fiesta and Mustang in moving more than 200,000 units around the world in 2016.
How to Buy a Sold Out Mustang or Focus
While the Ford Focus RS and the Ford Shelby Mustang in both GT350 and GT350R trim are sold out for the 2017 model year, there is still a chance of walking into your local dealership and driving out with one of these high performance Ford Motor Company vehicles.
When a car like the Shelby GT350 or the Focus RS is “sold out”, that means that every unit planned for production has been accounted for by the company. This includes vehicles which have been ordered by a customer with cash in hand, but it also includes dealership stock orders. You can no longer walk into your local Ford dealership and place an order for a 2017 Shelby Mustang or Focus RS, but there is the possibility that the dealership will have one on the showroom floor which is available for sale.
Of course, if the dealership has one of these high performance Ford vehicles in stock and available for sale, there is a possibility that it will have the dreaded dealership markup. With that in mind, if you are hoping to buy a 2017 model year Shelby Mustang or Focus RS, it is best to shop around for the best price, or you can wait for the 2018 model year – provided that these models are offered for the 2018 model year.
