2018 Ram 3500 Packs 930lb-ft of Torque, New 5th Wheel Hitch Pulls 30k

FCA announced this morning that the 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel will deliver 930lb-ft of torque while the redesigned 5th wheel hitch is rated for 30,000lbs – making it the most capable 1-ton truck in America and the most powerful 1-ton in terms of torque output.

The latest shot has been fired in the battle of America’s strongest trucks, as the 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty now packs 930lb-ft of torque from its 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, making it the top dog in terms of torque. Also, the 2018 Ram 3500 has an optional 5th wheel hitch setup with a capacity of 30,000 pounds – making it the most capable 1-ton truck in America.

"Ram maintains capability leadership by delivering the highest-ever torque rating for a pickup truck and heaviest fifth-wheel trailer towing capacity," said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep & Ram Brand, FCA Global. "We understand the attributes most important to our customers within the heavy-duty segment; they demand hard-working, long-lasting capability.”

2018 Ram 3500 Power and Capability
The 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty is offered with a revised 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, packing 385 horsepower and 930lb-ft of torque – up 30lb-ft over the 2017 Ram 3500. This extra power was achieved by means of adding boost and fuel flow, and with 930lb-ft, the Ram 3500 offers more torque than any 1-ton truck in America.

Next, the 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty is offered with a new 5th wheel hitch assembly from Ram Engineering with an incredible 30,000lb capacity. Although the current Ram 3500 has a maximum towing capacity of 31,210lbs with the gooseneck connection, the 5th wheel setup for the current truck has a limit of 25,000lbs, forcing buyers to make some changes if they wanted to tow to the fullest potential with that style receiver. For the 2018 Ram 3500, the optional 5th wheel setup is rated for 30,000lbs, giving the Ram 3500 the highest rating of any 1-ton truck sold in America.

The closest competitor for the Ram 3500 in the world of heavy duty pickups is the Ford F350, which when properly equipped can pull 32,000lbs with the PowerStroke Diesel packing 925lb-ft of torque. However, Ford’s 5th wheel hitch assembly has a capacity of 27,500lbs, giving the factory-equipped Ram 3500 the lead in factory-equipped 5th wheel towing capacity while also leading in engine torque.

The 2018 Ram 3500 30,000lb capacity 5th wheel assembly has an MSRP of $1,395 and the part number is 82215769. Best of all, that piece can be retrofitted to the 2017 Ram 3500, so those current 1-ton Cummins owners can upgrade to that heavier duty piece to match the 2018 models.

As for the 2018 Ram 3500 with the stronger 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6, those trucks will reach dealerships in August.

I hope folks know the difference between pulling 30k and holding 30k. Getting tired of seeing these hotshot trucks with their headlights pointing at the moon
