Over the past year or so, the entire American performance car community has been talking about the upcoming Hellcat Hemi – which is expected to bring somewhere between 600 and 700 horsepower to the Dodge Challenger. The Charger never really came up when the Hellcat was discussed, although it seems like common sense that if an engine is offered in the SRT level Challenger it will likely also be offered in the SRT Charger. Needless to say, the fact that this new Allpar video shows what is clearly the Dodge Charger performing some hard, high performance launches with what is believed to be the new 6.2L supercharged Hemi all but confirms that the Charger will also get the Hellcat Hemi treatment in the very near future.
The Allpar video showing what is likely a 2015 Dodge Charger wearing camouflage on the front and rear, has two clips of a Charger coming to a stop on a fenced in test track and then launching hard – rocking through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear as it blasts past the car of the cameraman. We can see how quickly the Hellcat powered Charger accelerates while the sound of this hard-charging sedan certainly sounds more fierce than any of the current Hemi engines. The 5.7L, 6.1L and 6.4L Hemi all sound great under a hard load, but none of them sound as aggressive as the engine heard in this video. Most significantly, as the car passes the cameraman, this Charger Hemi test car really sounds incredible and with more than 600 supercharged horsepower – there is a good chance that most other performance cars will be hearing this beast from behind.
The two biggest questions about the Hellcat Hemi pertain to how much power this new supercharged beast will create and when it will finally arrive. We expected that the Hellcat Hemi would debut with all of that supercharged power under the hood of the new Challenger at the recent 2014 New York International Auto Show, but that didn’t happen. At this point, there are no more major auto shows until Los Angeles in late November so we are either going to be waiting a good, long time for a big auto show debut or SRT will have to roll out the 600+ horsepower monster at some event other than a high profile auto show.
Make sure that you crank up your computer speakers, as the sound of this Dodge Charger test mule is more than half of the awesomeness of the video. Watching a Charger test car with more than 600 accelerate hard is fun – but hearing this car in action is really music to my ears. Enjoy!
