What is the Porsche Next Design Challenge? This is a very original design competition that will showcase the most talented of young designers. If you want to showcase your skills to the world, this is a great opportunity. You just need to remember to do one thing, honor that of the most iconic of designs, the Porsche 911.
“We're looking for creative thinkers to image entirely new products inspired by the Porsche 911's iconic design, engineering artistry and racing heritage.” is a statement from the contest website. Do you think you are up to the task?
Porsche and Co.Design want you to tackle this challenge. They want to see intelligence, passion, and vision, whatever the product may be. The only real requirement is it must be inspired by the Porsche 911. Widely considered one of the greatest sports cars of all time! Designs could be a world travel kit, clock, cellphone, watch, etc. All designs should follow three simple guidelines:
- Your design has to be smaller than a living room but no smaller than a wallet.
- It can't be a car.
- It must have three design details that echo three other details from a Porsche design. These might be taken from the exterior or the interior of the car; they can be taken from Porsches of any era.
Remember there are lots of design details that go into creating a Porsche. Details on any car build upon the rest coming together to create the vehicle's overall essence. Just imagine how to improve upon the amazing design of the Porsche 911. Could you be influenced by the taillight and improve upon the shape? Perhaps to create a deck of cars. I don't really know, but that is for you designers to figure out.
What do you get if you win? Duh! A brand spanking new Porsche 911 for your driving pleasure. (Well it's a 1-year lease. That kind of sucks, but at least you could enjoy a Porsche 911 for 1 year. That's better than nothing!) If you would rather not get a Porsche 911, which would be crazy, you can opt to get $20,000. A nice bit of money to save for when you do want to buy a Porsche 911!
Work will be judged by two well known designers, Dror Benshetrit, who has created products for everyone from Cappellini to Target and Jens Martin Skibsted, founder of Biomega and the designer behind Puma’s superb line of city bikes. As well as Co.Design's editor, Cliff Kuang.
Porsche Design Challenge Process:
Prospective designers have until April 6th, 2012 to submit a rendering of a design. In addition, a description detailing what was imagined and how Porsche design influenced it is also required.
The Top 25 designs will be revealed on Co.Design website.
In the next phase, the judges will narrow down the entrants designs to seven. Those seven designers will then be asked to revise their original rendering to refine their concept even further. Include more detail, more thought and more creativity.
The final seven revised designs will be posted to Co.Design website. Then everyone can participate in voting for their personal favorites. Friends, family and admirers can come to the site and choose a favorite entry. During this period the judges will be discussing the submissions too, and then will pick a grand prize winner, which will be revealed on On May 21st, 2012.
