Every New Vehicle Owner Convinced Their Model Has Defective Windshield and Roof Glass

Do you own a Tesla, Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Mercedes, General Motors, or any other brand vehicle? Your fellow owners are convinced that the glass is soft, stressed, or defective.

You just brought home your new vehicle. It's perfect in every conceivable way. However, within just days of owning it, the windshield is cracked, chipped, or another defect related to the glass presents itself. Obviously, the car is defective, and your warranty will pay for the repairs. Guess again.

One thing I learned early on is that new owners bummed out about windshield and glass damage is a meaningful percentage of the posts.

Is Your Windshield Defective?
As far as we know, there is no relationship between a chip occurring and the age of a windshield. However, the likelihood that a new vehicle owner will throw up a post about damaged glass sure is. One we saw this afternoon was the inspiration for this story. It read, "Anybody notice that the glass is soft on the car? I got 2 small chips in the past 2 weeks." So I searched inside a number of groups in which I participate to see if the keywords "Windshield, chip, crack" result in a lot of activity. It's not just a lot, it's an avalanche of posts. Here is a quick rundown on some we found that seem to apply:
- My Model 3 is going in next week to replace a cracked windshield. $1,300.
- Our Honda Clarity had a tiny tiny chip near the top of the windshield in front of the driver, which has extended into a crack to the edge. I don't recall any kind of impact.
- Anyone else notice their Prius windshield is a chip magnet? I have 2 obvious chip already after 18 months.
- My 124 Spider's windshield just cracked! Safelite says just the parts are $1600 for the molding and brackets.
- I was parked and my Colorado ZR2's windshield crack right in my face... no rocks smashed my windshield.

Will Car Insurance Pay For Glass Repair?
The good news for many vehicle owners is that glass repair or replacement is a no-deductible insurance claim in some states such as Massachusetts. The option to repair or replace may be up to you.

How Many Brands Have Class Action Lawsuits Related to Windshields And Glass Roofs?
In addition to the Subaru lawsuits related to windshields, Toyota has also been sued. And also Hyundai has been sued over windshield defects in the new Palisade. Tesla's new Model Y crossover is only months old and it has already been recalled over its glass roof. Mercedes has also been sued over glass roofs. And Honda was also sued over this same issue.

I bought a 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec in March of this year. I have not put very many miles on it and I have been happy with it. I was driving home from work at around 6PM, pulling up to a red light in traffic, when a Lexus SUV driving on the shoulder kicked up a rock that hit my windshield. I heard it, was annoyed, but what do you do? I figured I would go to get it filled on my lunch break that next day! NOOOOT! I go to leave for work that next morning to see that darn windshield cracked about 4-5 inches already! WTH!

Acura claims that they do NOT cover this, as it is NOT included in the warranty once cracked! SMH.

I am now understanding why I have seen so many people around town driving new vehicles that have the blue tape from replacing their windshields. I have owned 5 other Acuras and never had to have any of those windshields replaced!

KICKER: Acura told me it would be $3k to be replaced. Get out of here! YEAH, NO!!

I bought my 2020 RAV4 hybrid SXE brand new in April 2020. Had it 19 months and had numerous chips and the “stars” referred to by others all in the windshield. Only one was big enough to fill but have no idea when it even occurred as there was no noticeable impact. Some of the others occurred from small rock pings. I’ve owned many vehicles and I’m a good driver who never follows closely and I’ve NEVER had issues with chips, cracks, or “stars” with any of my other vehicles. Definitely feel that there is a legitimate issue with the newer Toyota windshields. No telling how much to replace them especially seeing as how mine had the keypad installed on the windshield (worst idea EVER!!) Glad I traded it before it cracked completely. Toyota charges too much for vehicles for this to be an issue.

My 2021 Toyota camery sunroof shattered. It sounded like a gun shot. Nothing was in front of me so I don't know how anything could hit my sunroof.

2020 Tacoma, two chips in the first three months, fine… whatever. I have windshield insurance (AAA). Repair guy comes out, looks at glass and shows me long vertical scratches IN the glass, not on the inside, not on the outside, can’t feel them. He said he has NEVER seen anything like this. Long story short….Toyota said it’s not their problem…. Still dealing with it!

We bought a 2021 Toyota Sienna and have been quite happy. This morning, while driving on the interstate the windshield suddenly began to crack, it was silent, spreading horizontally until it covered the majority of the width of the windshield and while it was spreading, it made a single loud cracking sound--but NOT before, so I don't think it was an impact. We've been told that it will be around a thousand dollars (camera system) and that there may be supply chain issues.

Not 3 weeks after I bought a Toyota Rav 4, I was on the freeway and a small pebble “tapped” my windshield. My daughter and I watched in horror as the crack spread from the edge of the driver’s side to the middle of the windshield. I’ve had many pebbles hit my windshield but I’ve never had this happen before. Quoted 2K to repair!!

I have a 2020 Toyota RAV4. A few weeks ago, on a very cold Canadian morning, I turned my car on and let it run for 15 minutes to warm up and so that the ice on the windshield would start to melt. I scraped the windshield with a plastic scraper. I did not use much force or effort as the ice was already sliding around on the glass. I got into the car to see that the entire windshield was scratched from me scraping the ice. Long story short, I contacted the dealer and Toyota Canada and they refused to replace the windshield claiming that the windshield was no longer under warranty and they refused to acknowledge that the windshield could have a manufacturer defect such as being too soft to handle a plastic scraper?! Needless to say, I am fuming.

I have a 2019 TACOMA Pick-up. The windshield just cracked (while driving at about 5mph) for no apparent reason. It was about 20 degrees which may have contributed.

Additionally, must husband also worked at a Toyota dealership and had 2 different 2019 Demo Camrys - and both winsdhields broke while driving on the highway, which left him responsible for the $1,000 deductible..

Obviously, this is a design flaw in all of the Toyota vehicles (not a configuration issue which should be attributed to a certain model). This problem is across the full spectrum of Toyota vehicles. How much $ could the company be saving selling vehicles with "TOO THIN GLASS" . Apparently this is still an ongoing SAFETY issue. VERY DANGEROUS!!! NOT GOING TO BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA - since no effort has been made to correct this deficiency; despite ongoing class action lawsuits.

I had multiple cars with this problem! And I've been saying for awhile how cheap all these windshields have gotten.. now I know manufactures are just making crappy products to maximize their profits.

2017 Acura MDX with 1 ding 1st 2 weeks
2017 Cadillac XT5 with 3 Ding 1st 3 months

I have a 2021 Lexus 300 hybrid the windshield spontaneously cracked from
The center of the windshield where the crown of the glass meets the roof of the car. At the origin there is an obvious deviation in the glass and a separation wide enough to stand a business card in. Dealer refuses to replace claiming the crack was caused by a rock chip.

3 broken windshields in one year for 2021 Toyota RAV4. I’m just driving around town. I didn’t hear the first 2.I heard the third , but saw nothing hit. I wonder if it cracked from press on its own. Should I buy my own Safelite ?

2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid - 2 chips/cracks in one month by rocks. No other windshield would have chipped/cracked because it was not even hit hard.

I can't say what it is because when you touch the surface from both sides of the glass, it is smooth.

When getting my windows tinted, the ladies fake diamond decoration around her apple watch scratch my driver-side window. It was replaced. The cracks get filled. I am tired of going to the auto glass repair places. About to trade it in for a 2015 because in 5 years the windshield stayed flawless.

2021 Audi A6 purchased Nov 2021. Chip fixed within second month, second chip month later turned into an 18 inch crack overnight. Got replaced with OEM for the tune of $2200 and within 4 days have 5 new chips needing repair. Has never been driven on gravel roads, this is all from highway or city driving. Owner less than 6 months and has less than 8,000 miles on vehicle that is now about to be on its third windshield. Unfortunately, my insurance doesn’t have $0 deductible for windshield replacement. I’m convinced it’s a defect. Dealership told me that Audi windshield chips and cracks are rare and that I am just unlucky. Apparently they’ve never read any recent car forums about these issues.

My husband and I purchased a new 2021 Toyota 4 Runner in September 2021. We’ve had 9 chips fixed and I currently need one more fixed making this 10 chips in my new 4 Runner. We also have a Toyota RAV4 2019 and have had 9 chips and a full windshield. I’ve talked to Toyota service department today May 6, 2022. They had the nerve to tell me that I’m the only customer in all their 1,000’s and 1,000’s of customers had this issue. So I began to do my research as I knew I wasn’t alone in this issue of cheap windshield of Toyota. I found lots and lots of customers who have had this same problem!

My husband and I bought a VW Atlas brand new in 2019 Since then we have replaced one windshield because of a chip that cracked in 2021. This replacement windshield which is over $900.00 to replace because of the sensors in it has now had two chips filled in it and the windshield taken out to be put back in because it was not put in correctly when first replaced and was sliding down. I now have a third chip to get filled which possibly may have a second spot right by it so maybe two chips to fill. This is all in less than a year. Two of the times the chips occurred were from being on two lane highway and the rock or whatever hit was from vehicle headed in the opposite direction than me. Not from following behind someone. Can someone please help me in the right direction with this problem. Thank you!!

It’s May 11th 2022 and I now have a chip and a crack to get fixed! I just wrote the review above on May 6th. This is now at the ridiculous point!!! No one should need to get 21 places fixed on their New 2021 Toyota 4 Runner in 8 months time frame!!

I bought a Toyota 2019 CHR and driving down a real highway no cars in sight, I hear a pop and instantly have a 5" line in my windshield. Wondering how they have cheapened the glass the car manufacturers are using.

I noticed one day when i got into my 2022 hyandi elantra that the windshield was cracked. It wasn't just a simple chip or a small cracked it was almost a perfect circle and not 1 but 2 circles one on top of the other. It looked like it had been hit with a hammer or something of that sort. Thankfully I have cameras and let me tell you they sure do come in handy sometimes. I looked at my cameras and saw the whole incident unfold. It was daylight so I could see it perfect and no it wasn't vandalized. I myself had to watch the incident a couple of times because I couldn't believe it, I even zoomed in to get a real close look. So it was nothing I mean nothing at all any where around my car. I could hear and see it perfectly. It cracked once and then again. Also I did not have NO scratches, chips or cracks in my windshield before this. So explain to me what happen. If that isn't a malfunction then what is it? By the way yes I did take it to the hyandi service center and sent them the video and of course I'm currently waiting on them to hopefully replace it.

There has to be available data that shows the history of windshield replacements on each model of car, going back 20 to 40 years. My suspicion is that the windshields on older cars got a lot of rock hits, but they never resulted in any damage other that the small spot where the rock hit. However, if windshields on newer model cars are flimsy, then the comprehensive insurance rates are going to be taking big increases in the next couple of years. An insurance company cannot afford to charge you $100/yr for comprehensive and replace the windshield once a year.

Brand new 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce, one chip last week noticed after a hand wash, one today after normal driving, very small but durability is a concern. Out of all of the vehicles I have owned not one of them has ever gotten a chip from local normal driving--our work van is 20 years old and doesn't have any chips.

We completed a 7500 mile trip on July 8. During the trip, approx. on July 5, heard a pop as a big truck was passing us on the right. We noticed nothing on the windshield at that time. Today, July 18th, while preparing to head to a local store, noticed a long crack on the passenger side, angling upward toward driver side. On our similar trip last year, after having driven about 6000 miles, we stopped at a diner for breakfast; when we came out, there was a crack on the driver's side, starting at the top, angling downward. Windshield replacement was needed, costing us over $500. The vehicle is a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV.
