The 2020 Subaru Outback, Forester, or Crosstrek right from the factory all make a great adventure rig for winter excursions. But this winter you might want to go a little farther after a day of snowboarding, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing. You can do some camping and spend a few more days in the high country if you find all the motels full of out-of-state vacationers.
Your Subaru already comes with a “go-anywhere” attitude with an excellent Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and X-Mode for more extreme off-pavement adventures. Here are four simple bolt-on upgrades you can add to your all-wheel-drive vehicle to make it the best winter rig.
All-Terrain Winter Tires
You will want to take off your all-season tires soon and replace them with a good set of All-Terrain Winter tires. This will allow you to have extra grip in deep snow and on icy surfaces and get to your destination safely. You can put your all-season rubber on next spring and get at least two seasons from the winter treads. Check out the 7 best winter tires for your Subaru.
Roof Rack For Storage
The Subaru Outback, Forester and Crosstrek are compact SUVs and you’ll want the extra cargo carrying ability with a roof rack. There are quite a few options for your vehicle, and depending on your need, there are platform racks that have accessories such as shovel and ax holders, light brackets, tire tie-downs and more.

Baskets are much more useful for gear since they have raised sides and help keep gear in place. We’ve already done the research. Click here to check out the best roof racks and baskets for your Subaru Forester, Crosstrek and Outback all-wheel-drive SUVs.
Rooftop Tent
A rooftop tent is a great way to be able to extend your days on the slope without having to pay for an expensive motel room near the resort, especially during the busiest times when vacationers have ascended on your local ski area and taken all the rooms. A rooftop tent is easy to install gets you off the cold ground and can be used in a Wal Mart parking lot. Here are the seven best rooftop tents for your Subaru.
A Trailer Hitch
A trailer hitch will allow you to carry a storage box behind your Subaru Outback, Forester or Crosstrek for ski gear and to nicely stow away your roof-top tent. You might want to get the highest class II hitch in case you do want to pull a small camper. When you want to hit the trails next summer you’ll be set and can easily add a trail bike carrier for multi-use. Subaru offers a trailer hitch and here are four top options from Hitch Freak.

That's a "Hard no" for sleeping in a tent in the winter by a ski resort to save some bucks on a hotel room. Was hoping for a turbo to be one of the options for the Crosstrek that is perennially in need of some power.
