Genesis G80, G90 Belong to Elite Group With 3 Other Luxury Brands

The 2018 Genesis G80 and G90 share rarified air with 3 luxury brands. They all have the safest large luxury cars on the planet.

Genesis, the luxury brand of Hyundai Motor Group, accomplished what only three other luxury automakers could pull off. The Genesis G80 (when equipped with Dynamic Bending Light headlights) and G90 earned the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating within the “Large luxury cars” segment.

The only other large luxury vehicles to earn the top safety award were the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Lincoln Continental, each with one vehicle. The Hyundai brand also scored the 2018 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport to walk away with four vehicles to earn top honors. Subaru was the only other automaker to have four vehicles win the highest TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating.

What it means for luxury consumers

To qualify for 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, a vehicle must earn good ratings in several test categories. The G80 and G90 achieved those ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. It also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and a good headlight rating.

“Vehicles that earn our TOP SAFETY PICK+ award belong to an elite group,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund. “They excel in preventing crashes from happening, and they afford people optimal protection if a crash does occur.”

Comprehensive suite of safety features

Both 2018 Genesis G80 and G90 provide a comprehensive suite of safety features minimizing risk and maximizing protection for the driver, passengers and fellow drivers and pedestrians. Advanced safety features on the large luxury sedans include: Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Attention Alert, and Dynamic Bending Light with High Beam Assist.

When equipped with Dynamic Bending Light headlights, the G80 earned the IIHS’ designation under the provision that it was equipped with the optional Dynamic Bending Lights within its Ultimate package. This is the second year in-a-row the 2018 Genesis G80 and G90 luxury sedans scored TOP SAFETY PICK+ designations. The luxury sedans share rarified air with 3 luxury brands, they have the safest large luxury cars on the planet.

I test drove the G80 last week and found it to be very much like what the reviews said with one exception. I am 6'2 and my wife is 6'. after a short period of time we both commented on how uncomfortable the front seats were. They are way to short and quite stiff for the car that this is to represent. I loved the way it drove, a little concerned with the engine but I was prepared to buy but this was a total deal breaker. To take a long driving trip would be impossible.
Afterword's we were shown another model which had a seat extender. That proved to be a real difference, but it only came on the drivers side. I guess the passenger is assumed to be short. This to me is a major over site. Genesis needs to get real full size people to design the interior. This just too much money for such a oversite.
