There are plenty of news and rumors swirling around the next-generation Subaru WRX STI and a new report from CarsGuide says the new STI will be revealed in October 2021 and the performance car will arrive as a 2022 model year. They do not reveal their source from Japan but the report confirms the new-generation Subaru WRX STI is “readying for launch” now.
That’s good news for performance fans who are eagerly awaiting the new model to be revealed by the Japanese automaker. Torque News reported in February the next-generation Subaru WRX STI will pack 400 horsepower and 361 lb-ft of torque. The report came from Forbes saying they are getting this information from “sources close to Subaru.”
The report also says the newly redesigned STI will be powered by the Ascent-sourced FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer powerplant. Subaru Corporation is keeping quiet on the subject and all the reports are speculation. Subaru Tecnica International (STI), Subaru’s performance partner, will bump up horsepower if they do use the FA 24 engine, but it’s not likely it will be pumping out 400 horsepower when it does finally arrive.
It’s our guess the new STI would get in the range of 325-350 horsepower, similar to the exclusive limited edition S209 STI pumping out 341 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. This would put the new STI in line to compete with the new Volkswagen Golf R reported to be coming with 328 horsepower, a 37 horsepower increase over the current model.
The report also suggests the new performance-tuned STI will be 183 inches in length, 70 inches in width and 58 inches in height, and have a total vehicle weight of 3417 lbs. That’s a big drop from its current 3,527 lbs. Subaru will need to use lots of carbon fiber body panels to lower the weight of the STI that much.
If reports are accurate, look for the next-generation 2022 Subaru WRX STI to arrive next October. This would put it in line to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show. We would guess it will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next June. Stay tuned.
